Speaking out over Jordan 'honour killings'

Eight years ago a young Jordanian Muslim woman, Dalia, was stabbed to death by her father in a Jordanian "honour killing".

Dalia had fallen in love with a man, Michael, from a different religion - a Roman Catholic in the Jordanian army. When Dalia's father found out about their meetings, he stabbed her 12 times, and waited until she was dead before calling an ambulance.

This was an "honour killing". Dalia's father did not go to prison.

Honour killings:
UN estimates 5,000 a year
Permitted under Jordanian law articles 340 and 98
Usually carried out by brother or father of victim
Partner faces penalties if victim found not to have been a virgin

"Ninety percent of the cases that occur are based on just rumour and suspicion," Miss Khouri told the BBC World Service's Everywoman programme.
"So 90% of the women that are killed are still virgins at the time of death.

Many western governments fawn over strategically placed 'allies' and turn a blind eye to their more unsavory practices. That’s geopolitics for you, but what is breathtaking is their ability to then blithely claim moral superiority and support for human dignity.

Note: the last paragraph above is my comment, not the Beeb's.

CZAR ji

I knew you were going there! :)
Morals and morality for our esteemed president is a matter of convenience. Catch the tide of Patriotism; ride the glory of victory [of the good over evil]; reap the benefits of destruction and create a Frankentstein's to justify bedding the wife of Satan!!!! i.e Iraq/Iran war!!!

And oh my god, how dare India and Pakistan "play" wargames without including US!

But I laugh: Every time Bush shakes his pristine, pious, pompous stick at "evil" (yesterday...), nature gives us something else to worry about!!!! A Winter Storm! :)
And the heavens shall open up and sing "Halleluja"!!!!!!!!!!!!
Here I am waiting for a winter storm....!!!

You threw a bigass red herring that doesn't make sense at all.I have no idea how you managed to link "Western governments" to that article. I don't know whether

1. you are acknowledging honor killing as a cultural fact of life in Jordan that everybody, including the Western governments, who espouse standards of morality not in sync with those practiced by middle easterners, should respect or
2. you are blaming the Western governments for not doing something about this barbaric practice.

Are you implying that BBC reporters represent Western governments???????????

Or am I totally missing the mark?

Speaking of morals and morality, let's play a game called "Name me that president". Could you name me that president who said, " I did not have sex with that woman... Ms Lewinsky", took a 180 degree turn later on when he was called to court, and defended himself by giving his own definition of sex?
Oh yeah, I forgot, sexual impropriety doesn't count as being immoral; he was only getting his groove on. How stupid could I be?

While the Falklands war raged in 1982, the Beeb conscientiously reported "British troops..british navy..Argentinian ..' etc instead of 'our' and 'theirs.' A charge of being unpatriotic was levelled at them, to which they answered that their objective was to report the news 'impartially' as observers. They werent taking sides nor were they involved in the war per se.

How posting of an article from such an establishment suddenly translates into implications of them being reps for the west has me hornswoggled.

The excerpt was to draw attention to the practice of honour killings. The addition of my comment was to provide further food for thought. There. I've spelled it out good n proper now. Enjoy!

Listen, I still don't understand what your comment has to do with the article. Food for thought when there's no association? Don't get it. Your lil comment made it seem like you were using the reporter as a representative of Western Governments as a unit( because the article never mentions "Western Governments", not even once), which of course is downright silly. That's what YOU made it sound like, not me. So no, not my fault. Sitara already fell for it.

Bhedo ji

Three words: Critical Analytical Thought!

At least you are honest!

:)
bhedo Posted on 27-Feb-03 07:41 PM

Two words, Sitara: Non sequitur

There's no doubt in my mind.
czar Posted on 27-Feb-03 08:24 PM

Don't sweat it. Draw whatever associations / implications / insinuations / conclusions you are capable of.

Sitara, make room for more students in your class.

hehe czar, how many more still can fit in Sitara's classroom?? or by any chance, can I get an overwrite from the teacher herself if the class is already full? I donot want to miss this glorious opportunity, NO not even one class. Let me know all the fees Sitara.

czar, very sad on the article though. Sad news!
