Women’s Studies Rearch Center presents: “PLEASE TELL THE WORLD ABOUT MY GIRLS.” MINISTER OF WOMEN, CHILDREN, AND SOCIAL WELFARE IN NEPAL Anuradha Koirala founder of MAITI NEPAL, which rescues and rehabilitates trafficked women and children from Nepal and India Wednesday, March 5, 2002, 12:30 pm at The Women’s Studies Research Center Brandeis University A charitable organization based in Katmandu, Nepal, Maiti Nepal was formed 10 years ago to protect girls and women from domestic violence, forced prostitution, child labor and other forms of exploitation and torture. Over the past 10 years Maiti Nepal has rescued more than 5,000 women and children. Anuradha Koirala founded Maiti Nepal with a group of socially committed professionals including teachers, journalists and social workers committed toward combating social crimes and female exploitation. Maiti Nepal’s special focus is to prevent the trafficking of girls and women into forced prostitution. Maiti Nepal has worked with local authorities and villagers to rescue these women and children — providing them with numerous services including healthcare, rehabilitation and counseling services — as well as teaching income generating skills. Maiti Nepal works to find justice for the victimized lot of girls and women by engaging in criminal investigations and waging legal battles against the criminals. It continues to highlight the trafficking and abuse issues with its strong advocacy from the local to national and international levels.
