Just to inform you all that Dr. Taranath Sharma is currently in US. He recently gave few talks at Florida International University in Miami, Fl. He talked about Religion, and also about the current situation of Nepal. I was glad to listen to him and meet him. I had heard about him through Mahendra Mala. Very gentle and educated person. You can read more about him at http://www.nepalpage.com/tanasarma p.s. Some Nepalese are taking him for sightseeing today around Miami. Hope they like the beaches and ??? He is accompained by his wife.

Ah! the Mahendra Maala and Dr. Tana. Will never forget his two travel narratives in it: 1. Ghanaghasya ko Ukalo Kaatda 2. Paris Muskuraunchha rangai ranga ma. Also some of those classic stories -- Lalu ra Kaal, Masine ko Shanka, Bhinaju ko sweater!

Dhumba, you're right. The travel bits are his, but the stories are not -- they just appear in the collection he edited. Bhinaju...is by Poshan Pandey; Masine ko Shanka is by a writer from Darjeeling, and Lalu ra Kaal is a folk tale.

I also read his "Belayat tira baralinda" before going to Belayat, and "Paatal Prabas" before going to Amrika. "Belayat Tira..." got a Madan Puraskar in chhabis saal (?) I think -- a good book that started the "Yaatra Samsmaran" genre in Nepali literature, but I think it is way, way over-rated as a classic.

I also an opportunity to meet Dr. Tana. Sharma a few weeks back while attending my friend’s wedding party. I’ve also known him since I read his travel stories in our textbook. I talked to him for couple of hours, and he divulged a great amount of frustration about the current situation of Nepal. Anyways, it was quite an experience to meet such a great writer. I always admire the classic narratives about his travels and the way he writes.

Guys, If this gentleman is in New England area, I think we should ask him to speak in Boston to the community. I think that would be a good opportunity. Anybody has a contact address?

Just read the guy's bio on the webpage link supplied here by M.P. Yeah, TaNaSharma of the Mahendra Mala fame. The bubbling ethnic pride, Navin Bhattarai lai pani Ameica leu, ghumau, Narayan Gopal lai pani, TaNa lai pani ... the guy got his Masters and Doctorate in the Mid-West. Should have known. I remember him for his uniquely flowing style in Nepali, his use of the "thet" words, away from the Sanskritized words of his peers. But pessimism abounds. The state of Nepal. The English medium education industry in Kathmandu and the Nepali writer TaNa.

MP and Nischal, thank you very much. I am a great admirer of his his works, he has his class and style of his own in the Nepali literary firmament. So if he does come up to Boston, it would be great to have him do a retrospect on Patalprabash, especially in the gloom and doom of the impending war. Peace!

Since I see no need to butter up Dr. Sharma, here are three questions I would like to ask him, were I to meet him face to face again in Kathmandu. 1. What makes him think, as he once wrote in "Nepal" magazine, that had he stayed in America after finishing his doctorate, he would have been a serious contender for a Nobel Prize in literature by now? 2. What made him praise Chandani Shah's poems during the Panchayati times, going, as he did, to the length of saying, "anyone who does not read Shah's poems knows nothing about Nepali literature"? Was this an instance of opportunistic genuflection on his part or an instance of critical assessment of CS's poems? 3. Why made him simply apologize and keep his job -- and NOT resign in defense of an editor's prerogatives and in defense of free speech -- when Nepal's parliamentarians stupidly, unjustly and childishly questioned him for something he wrote as an editor of The Rising Nepal? What does that say about Dr. Sharma's self-respect? oohi ashu ktm, nepal
