Some interesting postings from http://www.sebsonline.org Here's my third law: For every US visa applications, there is more than hundred times the number of rejections. The gravitational force between green card and Nepalese is stronger than the family bond. That is why people are willing to sacrifice 10-11 years of their children's/wive's life for it. The general equation $*Time Green card=---------------------------- morality*identity*family As long as the denominator remains low, and the numerator is higher, the force of gravitation leading to green card is stronger. |

No, real life models can not be that simple. :) MainBatti's Model to Fix the Universe (and hence, solve Brain/Grain-drain issue): Greencard = k * Job Experience, J [More the experience, more will be the chance that you will get a greencard. Greencard = K * a * Qualification, E [where a <1. This means academic qualification matters, but not as much as job experience. This is explained by the constant a in the equation. Greencard = k * 1/ Family Bond factor, F. [This family bond factor embraces two aspects--how many of your family members are here and the number of your close people you are missing from Nepal by staying here. More the latter, higher will be Fb and less will be the chances that you will have a strong desire for a Greencard.] Greencard = k * Resistance to calamities, R. [Calamities here include lack of availability of facilities in Nepal esp in Kathmandu--like water, electricity, etc.] Greencard = K * Personal Imperatives, I. For instance, if you are financing your brother's/sister's education here, you are more likely to apply for Greencard. Greencard = k * b * Social Expectations, S, where b <<1. This means sometimes people apply for greencard because people in their vicinity have done so, or because their parents make this an agenda everytime they call from home, so that they could boast with the aunts and uncles that their son/daughter has a green card. The idea of morality is offset by the idea of human freedom, and therefore both these factors are discarded in MainBatti's Model to Fix the Universe. Similarly, monetary advantage that people would enjoy by staying in the US, MainBatti expects, counteracts the satisfaction--social prestige, etc-- people get by going back to Nepal. Summing everything up, we get: Greencard, G = K * (J + I + bS + + R + aE ) / (F ). It should be understood here that some of the "pull" factors exert no force on the agent. But those factors enhance his/her getting Greencard. At this point, the other pull factors come into play. At the end, the overal effect does appear to have an important share in G. Often times, the only push factor--F--is not so strong. And, as it is obvious from the equation, G is likely to increase fast. Another important point in MainBatti's Model to Fix the Universe is that there is a clear distinction between brain-drain and grain-drain. When the increase in G is due to J--job experience--alone, for example by an actor/actress working and getting a visa, or the accountant of the foreign ministry coming here on a tourist visa and later somehow getting a visa--that is grain-drain. In other words, when G goes up due to J going up, the grain (bhaat) accumulated on the agent accounts for most of the loss Nepal has to suffer. And this lose is more or less offset by the income they earn and sent it to Nepal, thus uplifting Nepal's economy. The other factor--Brain-Drain--is yet to be tested. All we know at the moment is that "academically qualified" have been swayed by the pull factors, but we do not know if these pull factors were reduced, thus decreasing the rate of Greencard acquition, if there would be any significant change in Nepal's economy. So, at this point the effect of Brain-drain--the draining of college and universities grads from Nepal--can be said to have an effect not much from that of Grain-drain! More to follow. Please read: "At the end, the not-so-pully factors have an important share in G " [4th para from the end] Please read: "By an actor/actress getting a GREENCARD" [2nd para from the end] Last line in last para should be read as : "...Not much DIFFERENT from..." MainBatti Apologizes for the errors. MainBatti, March 07 2003 |
