Left handed Australian opener Adam Gilchrist puts Australian bowlers to the sword at Centurian Park, South Africa.

Australian openers made a cracking start to their Super Sixes campaign with Gilchrist blasting fours and sixes in style. He looks in great touch for the Aussies.

Earlier Australia won the toss and elected to bat first against Srilanka. They began their batting with Adam Gilchrist firing on left and right cylinders. He is looking well set for a classy ton agains the Lankans.

He went after the Lankan bowling attack, being positive from the word 'go' and he got the reward for it. He has smashed 12 timed boundaries and 2 towering sixes in his knock of 86 not out. This will be another fabolous hundred if he goes on to make it and Australia at the moment are looking well on course for the 300 plus.

Captain Ricky Ponting is supporting Gilchrist very well for his cameo of 36.

Billions of viewers around the world are witnessing a genius Adam Gilchrist at work. What a value he is for this classy Australian line up. He is already been rated as the best wicket keeper batsman ever and with this effort he has also reached 5000 one day runs.

The latest,

Australia 154-1 (25 overs) (Run Rate : 6.2)

Adam Gilchrist 86 runs of only 75 balls *
Matthew Hayden out for 22 or 37. Muralitharan claims the wicket.
Captain Ricky Ponting 37 of 47 balls *

ps. * = not out

AUS posted huge total of 319-5, this game is going to be interesting.

Yes, as allare said, a massive 319/5 by the Australians, once again proving that they have the best batting line up in the world. So sad that Gilchrist missed his century by a run. He was run out for 99 attempting the second run. Deep accurate through from Vaas, got his wicket and a blazing innings came to a disappointing end.

Captain Ricky Ponting upped the tempo, even after Gilchrist's downfall. He was happy to sit on the non-strikers end when Gilchrisht was immculate in his run scoring and was monopolizing Lankan bowlers to good effect. But after his dismissal, Ponting began playing his strokes and taking centre stage, timing the ball beautifully to reach a superb century. He smashed 4 huge sixes on his way to a very well made run a ball 114 before he mistimed a hook and fell to Fernando.

But nontheless, Ponting fell only when he secured Australian to a huge total. A good innings of 52 from Damien Martyn supported Ponting very well. But a late flurry of wickets, courtesy a good line and length from Fernando, walled Australian to only 319 when they were looking well set to climb above 350 plus.

Srilanka started their reply with a big blow early on. Their captain and fast scoring Sanath Jayasuriya returne to pavillion when he was injured and he retired hurt. Hasan Tillakratne has played some good strokes through the covers. But at the moment the Lankans run rate is only 4 an over and the required run rate already climbing to a massive 7 an over, one wonders how Srilanka are going to reach that total.

But you never know, its cricket and there have been some incredible innings, probably another Marvan Attapattu century or Tillakratne ton could get them close. But at the moment, star bowler McGrath is bowling at his best and boundaries are drying up for Srilanka. Something has to be done to score freely like Gilchrist did for Australia and then Ponting came onto score a mind boggling century.

The tast looks daunting for Srilanka and they need some good blows to get them going.

Good luck Lankans on your run chase.

Srilanka 46/2 in 11 overs. Marvan Attapattu fell for 16 to a low diving caught and bold catch from Brett Lee and then Jayawardane followed for a duck caught behind. Gilchrist takes the catch and Lee has two in an over and I think thats game over for Srilanka.

So Is Jayasuriya coming back?? That might be the only hope for Srilanka.
allare Posted on 07-Mar-03 07:18 AM

pity.. jayasurya wont come back atleast today, since his hand is fractured .. it seems now one sided game unless somethign happens from tail members
krishna Posted on 07-Mar-03 07:21 AM

Yes Sad new and to add to the misery, Srilanka are now 46/3. McGrath cracks Tillakratne stumps with a beauty and that is effectively game over for Lankans, thrashed in the hands of the world beaters.
krishna Posted on 07-Mar-03 07:28 AM

Another wicket fell, disaster for Srilanka, Russell Arnold gone lbw to Lee for 1 and Lee takes his 3rd wicket in what has been a breathtaking bowling from the Australian strike bowlers. Srilanka are now 48/4.
Absolutely Pathetic reply!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
what is hapenning here???????????
