Do you know that French in French fries doesn't mean the country French. It is merely a tribute to the inventor whose last name was French and was an American. Any talks of France putting a ban on Planet Hollywood and McDonald? |

DWI, I dont know where you got the information regarding the inventor whose last name was French and was an American.???? As far as i know it is called French Fries cuz' they came from France, and they were fried potatoes, so they were called "French fried potatoes." The name was shortened to "french fries" in the 1930s. I fyou need more info go and visit http://www.straightdope.com/mailbag/mfrenchfry.htm but DWI ji..that was something ... |

Hmm.. Kewl. I got that info from a tv program (or news) when this whold thing started. 2-3 weeks back when Americans from a small village started boycotting the french fries (later they changed the name), the reporter made that comment. I heard the same info from my coworker too. When you raised the doubt of the origin, I did the search like you did. It seems there are thousands of suggested origin of the name. Some say the fries were cut 'Frenched', or long style (source: http://www.texasescapes.com/AllThingsHistorical/InventingHamburgerFrenchFriesBB602.htm) Another guy says an American soldier was stationed in France and introduced it to USA. One claimed the origin to be America and another Belgium. Another website claims that a reporter was interviewing the guy who invented French Fries and he said he tasted the fries in Paris (Texas). The reporter thought he meant Paris, France (not TX); thus he gave them the name. source: http://www.texasescapes.com/AllThingsHistorical/InventingHamburgerFrenchFriesBB602.htm Most of the report do suggest, the origin possibly is not from France. Whatever the origin be, Kewl, lets just enjoy the Goddamn, tempting Fries. Specially at McDonald. You're invited to taste few at my home if you want. |

Gotta agree with kewl ji regarding the term "French Fries", and that's the right explanation for it. Guys, hear this: The Americans are now gonna say "Freedom Kiss" (that the Newscasters of MSNBC were chortling about last night; for French Kiss), and DWI ji, please don't say the French Kiss was first bussed by some American Actor named French, in one of those silent movies in the 50s hai feri... hehehehe jk. Anyway, in the same perspective one should start practicing to say the following: Freedom Wines for French Wines Freedom Perfumes for French Perfumes Freedom Cuisine for French Cuisine.. and Freedom blah blah blah.....that has everything that's associated with France or the French. THEN, LET'S START CALLING LE FRANCE = LE FREEDOM. Should we VETO the NATO and the UN for this resolution? hehehehehehehehe |

If "French" can be transformed into "liberty," I think the vice versa should also be allowed...France should take back the Statue of Liberty and name it "Mademoiselle Francaise." Just a stupid idea... |

Ha ha Poonte, that or Les Libertain. Soleil, how did you base your opinion so strongly on? I mean, do you know from a good source that it is how French Fries was(were) named or you are just following a hunch. In either case, who cares, right? Kewl n' I will be having some 'tareko alu', you're welcome to join, Soleil. Kewl, anytime u're in NY, lemme know ni. Jira ko McDonald ko story was funny. Speaking about Germany and their burgers, here is another thing I've heard (now don't get on me and start asking the validity of it), about the Hot Dog and its origin. They say, Hot dogs were introduced to US by Germans and during the World War, since Germans were enemy the US found a way to degrade them and still eat the food; what else, they called it Hot Dog. Now, verify the sources, go Fish. |

Hot dog????????? Two reluctant "fresh- off-the- boat" immigrants wanted to try American food/hot dogs re.... After much discussion they bought and sat down to eat it re... The first guys took one look at the brown bag and quickly pokoparoying it, said hatta patta... " Hoina, what do these Americans eat....Hana, WHAT Part of the dog did you get??????????"....re khoi...dunno if it is a satya katha! hehe! |
