King Birendra Bir Bikram Shah Dev's cold blooded murder has been very disturbing as a Nepalese citizen who grew up reading that the King was a reincarnation of God Vishnu. We grew up revering and fearing him at the same time. He was an icon of absolute power in our minds.

Now that he is gone and we have felt painful sorrow for his untimely departure, it is time for us to rethink the existence of Monarchy in our country.

First of all, can anyone imagine how much wealth the royal family has? It must be in the range of billions of dollars. Just imagine that. Then, think about the poverty that exists in Nepal. With per capita income in the range of 200 to 250 dollars a year, we are one of the poorest countries in the world.

Now that the KING is gone, we can think without any age old teachings clouding our judgements. Besides the immediate royal family, there are brothers, sisters, cousins, in laws, etc of the royal family who enjoy vast economic blessings just because of the fact that they are related to the royal family - as we can see with a vast number of businesses owned by this group.

Being a poor country as it is, why do we need this handful of people to suck the rest of the country dry? Ok, granted that hundreds of years ago, one of the ancestors of this family supposedly united nepal. So what?! We live in the 21st century today and we don't worship people today for what thier ancestors did 300 years ago! Columbus 'discovered' the united states, but today does anyone even know his descendents?

Nepal has been fooled for centuries by the propaganda of the royal family that has led the public to revere them as deity. Their propaganda starts as soon as a child begins to speak. Media, books everything leads an innocent child to believe that the royals are to be revered as a form of Vishnu. Knowing how powerful religious beliefs are, the royal family has taken advantage of the Nepali people for centuries. Sucking our motherland nepal dry, as evidenced by the impoverished condition of the society and the lavish luxuries and swiss accounts owned by the royals.

The Royals are just human beings and they need to be on the same level as any human being. Till now, we have been blinded by religion, but this is a wake up call. Why should they enjoy special priviledges while we as a nation suffer in the agony of illiteracy and poverty? Why should they be able to get away with murder, and us general people be insecure about our own daily lives and the lives of our loved once?

All their possessions need to be given back to the Nepali people. After all it's at the price of our development and democracy and rights as human beings that this royal class have gathered their fortune.

We should not be their slaves and let their age old propaganda ruin us, our future, the future generation and the future of this country that we love so dearly.

Jai Desh, no naresh please.

Mr. Concern,
I toallty agree with your comments.
While the rest of the Nepali under absolute poverty, these royals enjoy the whiskey, bars, billiard room, family dinners, enjoy Australia and London with girlfriend, Lexus SUVs, fire and ice, X-zones etc etc (all described after the incident took place).
These buggers (sorry for the word) have not contributed anything to the development process of Nepal and the same enjoy over the money of the poor Nepali.
The democratic govt. has given them more stipend than the panchayeti goverment.

I agree with both of you. I believe that the time for change is now. I hope people in Nepal know that they will not be alone when this change comes about. There are people all over the world voicing their opinion in this matter and will support them. Look at how much support they are getting from Boston.
Believer Posted on 07-Jun-01 03:06 PM

Perhaps he will abdicate, perhaps he may even be assassinated, or maybe he'll reign for 30 years. The crucial point is not who wears the crown, but that the crown still exists. On the streets of Katmandu, though the new King is personally criticized by some, there is hardly a groundswell of republicanism, despite the best efforts of Maoist rebels to exploit the situation by agitating for a progressive system of government.

Sabai Jogi Aaye, kaan chireka ? Is there any uncorroupt Nepali leader alive ? Are there any leader with shining moral values?
Are there any one who could take charge of the current situation and guide this country towards political and financial independence?

King is an institution that a Nepali can relate irrespective of their education, caste and language. We need an identification. We need something concrete that everyone can identify.

Who do you guys think if given chance should run for the presidency? Let's just use POE to figure out who is capable to be a president in Boston?
panchehater Posted on 07-Jun-01 05:06 PM

What should we do with those Panches?
rchhetri Posted on 07-Jun-01 10:11 PM

Let's put all panches', kangresies, commies and maobadis in a bora and roll them in trishuli nadi.

Gandhi's 'Swaraj' is a good way of administrating a country. Let's start looking for a able leader.
