Our cover article in America Nepal Update, http://nepal-usa.net , was supposed to be "Samrat Updhyay Enamors America." Should We say 'the world' now? ps. America Nepal Update is being launched on March 15. So, if you want to get your articles published in the online magazine, email them to us at admin@nepal-usa.net . There is no monetary compensation as of now. But we will be donating $2 per article published to the non profit organization in nepal of the author's choice. The fund will be accumulated and sent to Nepal at the end of six months. That might not sound much, but we are trying to make the small difference that we can. Later we might increase the amount depending on how the site and the journal goes. If things go well, we might even have a print version of the magazine someday, subscribed by universities as well as individual readers and communities. Who knows. This is the beginning for now. As someone perhaps never said, beginning is the beginning of every beginnning. So, lets begin! Admin, http://www.nepal-usa.net Nepal USA Network |

I don't think Samrat is a Buddhist. But I am not 100 per cent certain. Enjoyed reading the Time piece. Comgratulations to Samrat. I am very, very happy for him. To younger Nepali writers, he remains an encouraging and supportive mentor/friend -- even from a distance. Thanks NirajBS for the link. At this rate of success, when is Oprah going to choose Guru of Love for her Book Club? :-) oohi ashu ktm, nepal |

Finally, received my copy of Samrat's novel -- quite clean and intact, after five weeks of travel through the Amazon warehouse, scrutiny of postmen at Grand Central in NY and thick-glassed communist censors at home! Read it in "ekkai saas-ma". It was quite worth it. "Buddhist" detachment etc., ta reviewers haru ko garbage bhai haalyo. Sex ko ke kura garai bho ra? Samrat aafaile bhannu bhaa thyo malai dui barsa aghaadi -- "I just love writing about sex." But I must say, there's something really great about his endings. Had absolutely admired his endings in "The Good Shopkeeper" and "The Room Next Door." And that final bit in "Guru" also arrested me. As I described it to some friends -- even after the book ended, I felt that the book kept moving -- like a slow train that keeps going even after completing its long, tumultuous journey at a designated station. |
