The media is speculating on whether the person appearing as Saddam in yesterday's meeting was actually Saddam or not. Although the possibility exists, I present my analysis why it can't.
After the first round of attack Saddam appeared on Al Jazeera addressing the nation. One of the news channel went on asking a plastic surgeon to confirm it was Saddam. The surgeon, as expected, remarked that it might be his double as few facial lines were missing. Yesterday, March 20th, there was a cabinet meeting(Tariq Ajeez was present) held by Saddam and media is heavily speculating that Saddam could be missing
from the meeting, or the meeting might have been recorded earlier.
First of all, one of the news channel has presented a plausible reasoning that the meeting must be a recent one as a key leader is missing from the meeting and that the intelligence has reported this person was designated to the North of Iraq recently by Saddam. These two facts sit really well with the reasoning that the meeting was recorded earlier.
Now, one fact that the media is missing is the necessity for the body double. Osama Bin Laden might require a body double because his longetivity is a symbolism for the Jihad. The figurehead represents the presence of authority that could drive the muslim fundamentalists. Why would Saddam's body double be presented when Saddam is dead?
Its very clear that this is a one sided war and US will emerge victorious. There is no religious agenda or even a country's sake here, it is US versus Saddam. If Saddam is down, the Iraq might as well give up, who could benefit from Saddam being alive but Saddam himself. Not the political leader, they can't continue this act, US will keep
bombing as long as Saddam is alive. So the only person left is now Saddam's decendents. Uday and Qusay. Uday is the head of the state media and could well have influenced media on presenting the fake appearances.
But the high level meeting is not in Udai's reach. Udai, matter of fact, is not the powerful right hand of Saddam, it's his younger son Qusay who has that much of power. Qusay is believed to have a controlled temper and prudent on such matter. Qusay should know well that if Saddam is dead, there is no point making the fake apperances of Saddam
as US isn't going to give up until they confirm Saddam's death. Does he want to continue the war further? Do they so falsely believe in Iraq's power that keeping the troup intact by making the false appearance of Saddam is the prudent step to take?
Saddam's first appearance might have been a recorded one, there is a possibility. It is wise to record such addressing incase Saddam has to hide in a place which is far from the media reach. That is the only possiblity I can think of, & the media isn't speculating that particular possibility. But if Leaders know Saddam is dead, they wouldn't keep showing the fake apperances again and again as clearly this is not a war between US & Iraq, its between US(or Bush?) & Saddam, & the better it concludes, the better it is for every body else; even those in Iraq.
