Just reflecting on something out of cnn.com that pissed me off this morning:

"U.S. Marines had taken the new port early Friday, planting an American flag..."

(source: http://www.cnn.com/2003/WORLD/meast/03/21/sprj.irq.southern.iraq/index.html)

PLANTING YOUR FLAG AS YOU INVADE A FOREIGN COUNTRY... THAT DOES NOT SYMBOLIZE LIBERATION... IT SYMBOLIZES CONQUEST, IMPERIALIST DOMINANCE...

Planting the stars and stripes is not needed for finding weapons of mass destruction, nor is it needed for establishing democracy (the two excuses for the invasion)...

My guess is that the flag was not planted as part of US policy... but put there by an overly enthusiastic marine... nevertheless...what was he thinking??? Trying to generate more hatred towards the US... declaring Arab territory as American? Who trained him?

Arnico,
Yes, you're right. It shouldn't be the act of imperialism by territorial acquisition... He might be displaying the American smugness, or rejoicing the conquest over Iraq.
Raksiya Posted on 21-Mar-03 07:58 AM

But, whoever he is, he should know the meaning of demonstrating the flag on the other's land.

Check this out! The link is a dud! I wonder if CNN was told by the State department to remove it. Hmmm. Yeah, whatever it is with the CNN link, planting a flag in Iraq is a pretty lame thing to do. I agree its probably not a result of a directive, but as you said, result of over-enthusiasm. Whatever it is, what an idiot!

I hope the adminstration tells its soldiers to be more sensitive and walk the line with delicacy from now on. But as you know, war is war and there will ALWAY be rogue individuals who don't adhere to the rules despite their training and clear directives.

surya,

the link worked for me, after i carefully avoided pasting the end parenthesis. try again.
as for the flag, bfd. i'm sure people really got irked when they saw old glory planted on the surface of the moon or, better yet, when jim whittaker in 1963 became the first american to plant her atop everest after he conquered the summit. do you think arnico was peeved when the first marine killed in action "planted" his uniform's flag in the desert sand? now, THAT'S a symbolic statement.

If US army gets success in invading Iraq and continuing their flag wherever its conquers, that will be their stupidity. How ridiculous it is that they are celebrating their so-called 'success' over innocent Iraqi people and technically and militarily weak Iraqi army in this one-sided war.
