INS Special Registration Policies - Pooja Adhikary I attended a meeting last night regarding the Special Registration policies, mandated via the Justice Department and run by the INS offices. As you might be aware, there have been 4 phases so far of various Arabic and Asian countries, where men from these countries holding different kinds of visas, mainly for employment and education purposes, are being required to register with any INS office in the US. As phase 5 countries will soon be announced, (so far that includes India, Nepal and Sri Lanka) the net is getting wider and spanning into bringing more visa holders from various countries. Neither The Justice Dept. nor the INS offices have allocated any funds or given public announcements for educating the masses and have repeatedly said it is for the affected people to regularly monitor the websites. However, (understandably) we know that the last thing most of us are doing is hitting these websites. Since Nepal most likely will be on the next Phase, I think it is our duty to inform members of our community and spread the word. The ramifications of NOT registering are too high b/c not following procedure can lead to "out of status" and make people get deported. People (who fall into this category) may be subject to arrest, detention, fines and/or removeal from the US. There are many requirements and some notable profiling:First, it is ONLY MEN that need to register The exceptions, although they might change, A and G visa holders/refugees etc. don't need to register If you have a I-94/H-1/F-1 etc. you need to take that with another form of ID, if a student, must take a statement from your registar's office stating you are full time (a transcript is NOT required or recommended) It is also NOT recommended to take credit cards, cell phones, address books etc. as that leads to more questioning and making copies of your contacts etc. It is HIGHLY recommended to take an attorney for special registration, b/c we ALL regardless, of our status, have rights and that can easily get violated when we don't know them. IF YOU NEED AN ATTORNEY for special registration: call the american immigration lawyers association lawyer referral service: 1-800-954-0254 OR email your name, location, and what your need is for an immigration lawyer to: ilrs@aila.org IF you do need to register, please after doing so, fill out an on-line survey at www.aila.org/specialreg.html b/c your experiences matter and we want to keep tabs on what the INS does and treats you. A few helpful websites: www.aila.org www.ins.gov Please visit regularly to know what is happening b/c it is necessary to be informed. I hope this helps! Please forward this information to as many people as possible, particularly Nepali student groups as they are the ones that are targeted. Thank you so much for your on going efforts and help, it is greatly appreciated! Thanks, Pooja If you need to reach me, my email is padhi001@umaryland.edu and phone 410 837 2823 |

Go and authenticate user name and his/her email address on umaryland.Neither any student or staff by that name exist on their database nor does the email server return that email address as known address.....this is just another way to jack money off of gullible foreigners...how come I cannot find any documents about Group 5 countries online? |

Jackass, The least we can do is appreciate the information shared with us. I don't know about the validation of this particular e-mail add but SHE for a FACT is a student at one of the professional schools at the Univ of Maryland whether you believe me or not! Lets not try to bash the gesture that are intended to help us all. |

I am not trying to bash anybody, I am simply questioning the validity of this posting, instead of believing everything I see, hear and read. |

Gyan Bhadur, since you have applied for the green card and your work permit has been isseued, and GC is pending, you have already done the registering part. S no worries there. Besides, a badall says, it is not known yet that nepalese have to register also. But be very mindful when you change your address while your gc is in pending. you must notify Ins wihtin one month after you move to a new place. Failure to do so will reuslt in denying your application and possible removal proceedings. There is a form, i forgot the number, that you fill out and send to Vrmont if you are from the East coast. I think people from the west coast submit to Dallas office, i am not so sure. Again the best thing to do in your case is visit the Ins website and other lawyers' websites. Also speak to your attorney. Take care.. |

Only for students :On relation to the previous given INFO by Pooja, it sounds right enough.....But as long as you're a full time student....you don't have to go though all the trouble...The International department of your school takes care of all the INS related matters. It's the INS who contacts them and seeks our information from them...So, I say as long as you're a full time student and on good academic standing...it shouldn't be a problem for you |

Thanks pooja for making aware of changes. I don't think INS puts the phasewise list of countries which have not yet mandated to register. Therefore, we can't see for sure about phase 5 countries on their website. Whether Nepal will be added in the list or not, it's good to be aware of potential changes that requires substantial follow up. Students with F1/J1 visas and attending universities full time should not be much worried. As we are required to special registration to INS, universities are also obliged to inform all their international students with ample time to act on the notice. Some universities are also making arrangements for group travel to nearest INS office. Just don't forget to check your e-mail account often. If you are working 2 months for summer out of your university, try to read your e-mails once in a while. |

baje, nothing personal but quit shouting (CAPS ON = Yelling) ....check this archived posting from Jan-24, imagine you are not a foreigner and then think for a second, archiveposting .. does it look like a chain email that says 'forward this to 50 people' if you wish to become a millionaire? I may be dead wrong but I find it very hard to believe...other Asian countries are of much more threat than Nepal..... peace |

Forgive my ignorance, but I don't understand how people are suggesting us to contact our "attorneys" in case of any problems. Are attorneys really affordable for us students? Or is there a way one can get a personal attorney for free? How exactly does one get his/her own attorney as easliy as discussed in this and other threads? Enlighten me someone! |
