As soon as I hopped in, the taxi driver asked "kaha jane dai?". I was still managing my position and the driver had to know where was I going. "Ke ko hatar yallai", I thought. The galli the taxi was in was so narrow that the driver would need at least few minutes of meticulous maneuver to make the needed U-turn. "Jawalakhel" I answered. After few ghachyak ghachyak he made the U-turn cursing couple of times to the tight galli and a bhusya kukkur who decided to bark on the driver for no apparent reason. I was going to see a wonderful friend of mine there in Jawalakhel. It's been a while since we met each other. My excitement was a bit dampened to learn that lately my friend has been in and out of the hospital many times. I was somewhat worried too. I was just trying to remember the days that we spent together in this city of kathmandu.

As soon as he came out to a bit wider road, I asked him to make a right turn. I thought that street (the one I was asking him to take) was better and shorter than the one the driver decided to take. He caught me right there. "tapai bahira bata aaunu bha jasto chha ni dai..ho?", he looked at me through the rear view mirror. I was not sure what would it matter to him whether was I coming from bhitra or bahira. So asked him "Kina?" I am not a talkative person. I usually don't like to talk just for the heck of it. I am a quiet person, let me admit. "yo bato "wan we" bhako ahile ho ta" he said with a smile. "kaha bata aa dai?" he shot another question at me. The driver seemed much older than me but still he was using "dai dai" to me. What was he doing with his "dai ka dai" I didnt know. Was he trying to show some respect to his passenger or was that "dai" just his "thego" only he knew. I was not in the mood to talk anyway. So, I didn't answer him. Then he gave me few choices&.kaha bata aa dai&korea ho? I didn't answer..he continued with more choices&Singapur? Katar.. Kuwait&Saudi? Ki Japan tira bata ho?
With some irritation I answered, "kahi bata ni haina". He then said with an open laugh, "tyasto ni hunchha&dai belayat bata aa ho&ki America bata?" I said "Anh". America bata? He probably wanted to be sure. "ho" I answered. I thought he must be satisfied now. This driver was not letting me remember my friend and the things I wanted to remember.

"Raandi ka chhora& ahile marlas hai" the driver screamed at a kid who crossed the street somewhat running to greet his friend on the other side. The kid gave an angry look at the driver but did not say anything. America kaha bata aa dai? The driver came back at me. "Kina chahiyo talai&khurukka Jawalakhel hinna" bhanam ki jasto lagyo but I did not say anything. We were right in front of the Bhagwati bahal. I raised my right hand and first touched my heart then took the hand to the forehead. That was my first darshan to the bhagawati after many years. Then I also felt like offering my darshan to Bhadrakaali, so I asked the driver to go thru Bhadrakaali.

.........see below, please.

......
America ma kaha dai? He asked again. Kyalifornia ho dai ki Niu york? Tya niu york ma ta bin laden le jotyo ni hai dai plane lagera&hwar hwar ti aago lagera building the sat suttai basyo ni&."The place I was living at in the US was a small town of a small state. I was not even sure if the driver was aware of the state, let alone the town. He asked again, dai niu york ma ho? I was not sure why was he pushing for NY. I just said, haina&tara najikai chha" I said najikai chha because I knew if I had just said "haina" he definitely would have asked me "kaha ta?" again.

"Mero sadhu (saali ko logne) ni kam garchha ni tyha niu york ma. Dui barsa bho gako&paisa ta tanna banauchha&madise ko restura ma kam garchha rey&green card pani banaisakyo rey&.ani daiko green card bhaisakyo ta? " the driver asked.

"Rok tero taxi" bhanna lai jurmurai sakya the but I kept quiet. Kasto driver parechha bhane. I wanted to take my attention to the friend I was going to visit and this driver is singing his own song. "bhaisakyo" I just replied. "Citizen nai bhaisakya ho ki kyaho"? the driver asked again. I didn't answer. "huh dai?" I was getting angry at him.

Now, we were approaching bijuli office by that old bus park. It was crowded there. Hya American embassy ma visa nai didaina kya kada chha&ki chha saat lakh khayera dine re chha ke manchhe chinnu parne&.haina bhane dai haru jasto le esponsar garyo bhane ni dinchha rey sadhu le bhanya&dai le esponsar garya chha&.?" The driver was testing my patience. I told him "aba ek chhin America ko kura nagaram hai..". He gave me a weird look thru the rear view mirror and asked yet another question, "la dai ta risaunu bho ki kyaho&.?" Tauko hallayera haina bhandiye. I also told him I am trying to remember something. There was some problem on the road ahead bhrikuti mandap jane bato bhanda aagadi nai. The traffic was not moving.

I remembered the days we used to watch programs in sabha griha. How wonderful were those days. Just then my eyes settled on a scene. The scene was not an extra-ordinary scene around kathmandu but [the scene] drew my attention. There was this woman with a child wrapped around her back with a mailo patuka. I didn't know how old the woman was but seemed an "adh-baise". Neither I could not see her nor the child's face well because they were not so close to the taxi I was in. Also, a lot of people were walking between them and me. So, jhalyak jhuluk chhekinthyo pani. Fateko cholo mailo butte sari ma tyo aamai ko majburi was quite visible. Who knows when was her last good meal? Who knows when was the last time she really laughed from her heart? What fault did that kid commit to deserve such life? Why was she begging? Where was her family? Where was she from? Where was her husband?

Did Maobadi kill her man calling him a spy? Or did the security force kill him calling a terrorist? Or, is he at home or somewhere on the street having too much "jaand raksi"? or Is he with some "nagar badhu"? where was he?

I looked in my wallet. I had few thousand rupees on me. I wanted to give her all the money to her. I imagined how happy will she be to see her child wearing a nice cloths, playing with the toys he/she wanted to play with. She could also buy some decent clothes for herself. I noticed not many people were giving her money. I could see some people were saying something to her. I guess whatever they were saying was not nice or at least not something she wanted to hear. There were also those people who were trying to see her beyond the clothes she was wearing on. So sad!

A group of people walked by her and blocked my view then I lost her. I was still thinking how terribly the life was treating her. How would she emerge from this terrible life? What opportunities will the child have? Who is at fault here? Her fate? Is there anything the "democratic" government of Nepal doing for her and the likes? My heart wrenched.

" hijo dekhi chhoro bhokai chha&.hajooor&.." sochai ma dubeko ma magne ko hat aankha agadi ekkasi aauda jhasanga bhaye&.I looked at the begger. She was the same woman I was looking at earlier. The child with gadeka aanka&.futeko gala&and with little excitement was leaning against his mom's back. He gave me a blank look. Before I could take money out she backed off rather quickly. Our eyes locked. "Sabita!" I said. Then I screamed "Sabita!". She tried to run away and disappeared. The traffic slowly moved. I don't remember when I did I pass Bhadrakali...man yasai yasai udi rahyo!

Ani ending ta jhanai ramro !!!
>>>>Before I could take money out she backed off rather quickly. Our eyes >>>>locked. "Sabita!" I said. Then I screamed "Sabita!".
Nice suspense.... wah wah.

danggggg

PS you said: >>> or Is he with some "nagar badhu"?
Hoina! tyo "nagar badhu" kya ho ni gatthe? maile ta nagar badhu bhaneko town wife bhanthaneko. Tyo bhanya "town whorea" hoina?

sparsha Posted on 30-Mar-03 07:06 AM

Even though, the question is asked to Deep, but I wanted to reply because I really liked this word "Nagarbadhu". Badhu probably means "wife" [remember BAR and BADHU in a wedding]. So Nagarbadhu means the wife of the town. Hence, a *beshya*.

I recently read in a paper that there are many nagarbadhus stationed in kathmandu these days (some are even equipped with HIV and other STDs]. So, there with them "what you see is NOT what you get", I guess.

OK, let me not stir the story line.
