Apologies if that last one was a bit too big for your screen... and too slow in loading.

Here is a better sized one:

DWI Posted on 01-Apr-03 10:26 PM

Almost National Geographic level. Have you gone through the "A day in the life of" series? They have it on Africa now.
Your pictures are worth inclusion in that series for East Asia. What a resolution, better than Corbis.

DWI Posted on 01-Apr-03 10:30 PM

Guys, try keeping them as your desktop background, it really looks beautiful. I hope Arnico gives us the right to do so.
Arnico Posted on 01-Apr-03 10:42 PM

DWI, thanks for the compliments.

And thanks for alerting me to the need to clarify.

Yes, by posting the photos online here I absolute give you permission to use them for desktop background, or to print them out and hang them up... I was inspired to post them after a chat session with someone homesick... a feeling I can closely relate to.

HOWEVER, do I keep in mind that if you would like to use them for anything other than personal use, including, but not limited to publications, college papers, or projection during cultural events, then you are requested to e-mail me and obtain permission.

Keep in mind that copyright and intellectual propertyrights extend even onto the internet.

I used to think Ashu was the only person on San's payroll. Arnico, are you too? :)

Great photos! Thanks for posting them here. The first one went to my desktop. It is very useful too. I hope my friends no longer ask me: "Where do you park your car?" (if they are dumb not to see all those flat fields, it is their fault!)

Never seen such a beautiful (well, that applies to all your pics but the first one in particular) picture!! any idea about "jagga bhau" in that area? :) Where is that? It reminds me of Pumdi Bhumdi a little farther away from Pokhara. It's very placid, fresh and mesmerizing. The rest of the pictures are beautiful as well. Thank you for sharing those with us. Arnico Posted on 02-Apr-03 07:24 AM

Sathi haru ho. Thanks for your replies.

Mainbatti, actually if you wanted to park a car there you would need to take it apart, and get 20 porters to carry it about an hour uphill, and then reassemble it. There is no road yet there. Although the ridge on the other side does have a road almost along the top. As for your other question: sajha is a voluntary effort by all, including San.

Dilasha... I can e-mail you replies to some of your answers. You would not want to get real estate speculators to beat you to that place, would you? I am serious... way too much money in Nepal gets "invested" in relatively unproductive real estate bubbles (leaving far too little for productive activities). I have seen a little roadside bazar in Bardiya go through a huge bubble just because an engineer had shown up and talked about surveying for the possibility of building an alternative road to Surkhet from there. Hawa ko bhar ma. No plans ever existed for that road. If the word spreads that Dilasha is coming... then Dilasha might no longer be able to afford her dream land!

Dhumbasse: regarding homesickness. You know, I have lived in many places. I have often been asked where I feel at home. The short answer is "lots of places"... but the longer answer is that, whenever I am elsewhere I miss Nepal. When I am in Nepal I don't miss other places. I assume I am not the only one to feel that way.
If the peace talks in Nepal turn out well... then that will give another chance to us, the homesick abroad, to think more seriously about what we could *collectively* do to invest our time and money in Nepal, and in Nepal's social and economic development, in a coordinated way such that we can draw on our individual strengths, and overcome individual weaknesses... in ways that we together can *change* those things that are preventing us from going back as soon as we would like to? There is no other country like ours. How sad it would be for thousands of homesick to not go back just because of lack of economic opportunities, or because of social discrimination, or some other factor that can be changed.

Czar and Najar, my pleasure!

Joie... next time TELL me if you want me to buy you a bag in Assan :)

DWI... I did not answer last night: yes I am familiar with that book series. I suppose I could organize the photos into a less random sequence...

Meanwhile, how could I forget to post a photo of our relatives in Swayambhu?

Arnico, not only the resolutions, but your angles are also perfect. The last picture exemplifies the fact. You should seriously consider professional photography.

They used Olympus E20 and C4040 Zoom Digital cameras for the "A day in the Life of Africa" series, with the team that includes world class Pultizer Prize, World Press Photo and Pictures of the Year winners. Glad to hear you are familiar with the series. Do give a serious thought to what I said in the first paragraph.

I really liked the pics. Wonderful pictures, arnico. All are good, but I kind of liked the one of the Bouddhanath Stupa. The contrast, white, yellow on the dome, and rangi changi prayer flags, its just great. I am using it as a Wallpaper.

Sems like this time you didn't go to Taleju Cafe, otherwise we would have seen a nice shot of the Patan Durbar Area. :-0)

IF, here's one from the Taleju Care. Was strange weather... high cloudsthat obscured Langtang Lirung, but revealed lots of snow on Gasainkunda Lekh.

And let's end the photo series for now with a sunset picture.

I'll be happy to keep posting photos... but am not sure if I should add on to this one or start a new thread. How long does it take you to load the whole thread?

Wow Arnico!! you dazzled us through these breathtaking pictures and your photographic skills!! Hey you should publish a book! I'm sure you have enough pictures to do so. I'll be glad to be your agent ;-) Anyway, would you like to do a small exhibition here in MN? I'd be glad to organize one and I'm serious. Let me know.

Logical Sense Posted on 02-Apr-03 02:18 PM

Arnicoji, WOW!!!!

Your first photo is by far the best for color saturation. It has perfect light exposure and shutter speed, perfect resolution, perfect contrast, perfect angle, perfectly placed horzon, perfect depth of view (everythign is in focus), just too valuable moment captured right on time.

I wonder how does it look if you transferred with 100% resolution?

I would easily believe if you said it was taken by a Hasselblad, Mamiya or Rolleiflex.

Great work. Challenge to you, post more beating your own best (the first one)....

Arnico Posted on 02-Apr-03 03:31 PM

IF, you are right, my Patan shot must have been taken at 35mm.

Montou, the first photo is in Kaski jilla, halfway between Naudanda Fedi and the Dhampus ridge. You can see Naudanda on the ridge in the background.

Logical Sense: the trick to the first photo was to be in a beautiful place 10 minutes after sunrise. Also, the scene was quite evenly lit, so it really did not involve a lot of decisions (at least compared to photos like the last two where there was a huge variation in lighting across the photo. As for DOF, that was much easier for a landscape photo than for the Assantole photos which had people and objects much closer to me.

I am hesitant to transfer it at full resolution, since that eats up between half and one megabyte of space, and will be super-slow to load. Perhaps one day, in a thread of its own.

Dilasha: you are hired. Wohoo... I have a book agent! As for exhibiting in MN... sure one day. But by then you might be living in photo #1, instead of MN, hoina ra?
One other problem before I can start getting serious about this: most of my best photos are on 35mm slides. I don't currently own a slide/negative scanner (expensive!).

For people in the Boston area: if plans work out, I will be showing some Nepal slides during dinner at the New Year's party on April 13.

I think there are enough new people in Sajha that it does not hurt to repost some of the photos that I had posted about a year ago.

So... here comes another Patan photo :)

Arnico, your pictures are awesome. Love them all. Reminded me of Nepal, those hills and dales. Those hills and mountains that I could see as soon as I open my window first thing in the morning. And the Swoyambhu Nath's stairs that I used to climb every Saturday morning. Your pictures brought back all those memories. Wonderful! Keep up the good work!!! Hoping you will post more pictures of home.
Nepali Kanchi Posted on 05-Apr-03 06:34 PM

The focus on both humans and animals make these pictures come alive. The mountains and monuments are great, however, the prior really bring life into the pictures.
Arnico Posted on 06-Apr-03 06:49 PM

Quick question: would people like me to repost the photos that I had posted in Sajha a year or so ago?

For example this airplane view of Central Kathmandu...

astitwa Posted on 07-Apr-03 04:42 PM

Hello Arnico,

Great pictures !!! you have the artist's eye. I had a question for you, I am working on a project for kathmandu about the conservation of national heritage and the unplanned growth of modern houses. Since i am abroad, i couldnto find any photos of the contrast but i found one in your postings and also the aerial view of kathmandu. I was wondering if it was possible for me to use any of the photographs? Please let me know , would appreciate your help, is there any email address i can reach you.
thanks

nepalibitch Posted on 07-Apr-03 06:42 PM

czar Posted on 07-Apr-03 06:57 PM

Astitwa, work on urban development in the valley and its effects were studied and recorded by the GTZ-UDLE (Urban Development through Local Efforts), a German govt. project. If I recollect correctly, they were also involved in the restoration of historial sites and urban planning in an advisory capacity with the municaplity. Kathmandu municipality also worked on this issue and I recollect they had a city planning commisioner who had some bold plans, some of which have been been since implemented.

I'm afraid I don't have any contact information for you at this time, but you are urged to chase this down through research and contacts you have. Meanwhile, I will see what I can do.

Arnico: my apologies for detracting from the topic. Yes, would you have another aerial shot of the palazzo royale and/or the valley itself?
Arnico Posted on 07-Apr-03 10:26 PM

astitwa, you can e-mail me (or any other poster) simply by double clicking on my name on the left side of any posting, and then choosing to send an e-mail. That will get through to my actual e-mail account.

Nepalibahini: thanks!

Babaal and Czar: I have more and will post more. Currently have to prepare for two new lectures to teach this week ... in a reorganized/almost new class...last minute substituting for a professor who is traveling...
