I would appreciate it very much if anyone could recommend to me books by Nepali Nationalist writers such as Surya Bikram Gynawali and the other great Nepali thinkers of the early to mid 20th century. Interesting fact, most of these prolific and accomplished writers were based in Darjeeling. Wonder what that says about our past?

I am particularly interested in Nepali Nationalism as was described by Nepali writers of the past and also of today.......as a matter of personal interest would like to see what the writers of yesterday thought of and wished for Nepal and compare that with what Nepal is today and also with what Nepali writers of today have to say on the topic. Although points of view of non-Nepali writers are always interesting and educational, I am interested in what Nepalis have got to say as pertaining to what being a NEPALI means for them.

A good way to start--if you haven't done so--may be to look for Pratyoush Onta's writings on the "creation" of Bir Nepali Itihaas and the role played by writers like Surya Bikram Gyawali in the process. He pretty much demolishes the popular myth about Nepali nationalism and his analysis is fascinating to read. I think that was Onta's Ph.D thesis at U Penn. Some of his articles were published in the earlier (1996/97) issues of Studies in Nepali History and Society. He probably also wrote some articles on the same theme for The Kathmandu Post Review of Books, which may (or may not) be available on-line.

The reason I am suggesting you to go for Onta's writings is not only for what he has to say but more for the footnotes he uses in his writings and which will make it easier for you to decide which (older) books may be useful.

I don't know if the journal is available in libraries. If you are in Kathmandu, the journal should be available at Mandala, among other places.
