By the way, he is also the sponsor of INLS Sharma Mudvary Nepali Poetry Award which is awarded to winners of Nepali Poetry Competition every year at the ANA Convention. I would like to thank Sharma ji for providing funding for this award as well. Your contribution to the community will be remembered for a long time.

CORNING | Kindness, compassion and concern for the welfare of others. Those are the qualities sought in nominees for the Greater Steuben Chapter of the American Red Cross' Spirit of Humanity Award.

Dr. Hari H. Sharma is being honored for having those qualities as the winner of this year's award.

"Dr. Sharma will be honored for his many contributions that benefit people in need and inspire others to do the same," said Debby Woglom, vice chairwoman of the Red Cross chapter's board of directors.

Sharma was nominated by the South Asian-American Women's Association. The nominating letter described him as a model humanitarian and a person generous with his personal time, talent and financial support.

"Dr. Hari Sharma is an inspiration to his ever-growing family, his friends and all who come in contact with him daily," said Ishrat Mustafa, president of the woman's association.

Born in Birganj, Nepal, Sharma received a bachelor's degree from Banares University in India. A scholarship took him to Calcutta Medical College in India, where he earned his medical degree.

Sharma brought a wealth of experience to Corning in 1973. He had served as a medical officer in Nepal, Wales and England. He studied internal medicine, neurology and chest diseases in the United Kingdom. Sharma is a member of the Royal College of Physicians, the American Medical Association, the Medical Society of New York and the Medical Society of Steuben County.

Sharma has served on numerous hospital committees, including chairman of the Corning Hospital Medical Service and Critical Care Committee and as a member of the board of directors of the Guthrie Clinic. He serves the Health Ministry of the Southern Tier at its free clinic, as well.

For the past 10 years, Sharma has traveled to Nepal to help establish hospitals.

The 2003 Spirit of Humanity Award will be presented to Sharma at the chapter's Spring Seasonings Spectacular Mystery Auction on April 12 in the Corning Inc. Riverfront Cafe.
