He keeps watching Sid work on his homework on his study-desk. Sid continues working on the problem, and without turning back, says “What’s up brother?” “I hurt my leg” Nikhil says politely from outside the door.  “Okay. Are you afraid to come inside?” Sid asks, still focusing on his homework. “No” Nikhil replies politely. “I’m your brother. I’m not going to eat you. Come in.” Sid says finally turning to see Nikhil. Nikhil enters the room and walks up to Sid. Sid gives him a big hug, lifts him in the air, and asks him, “Okay, how did you hurt your leg?”  “I jumped from a chair, and fell” Nikhil replies politely again. “Let me see” Sid says and looks at Nikhil’s legs. He finds a rough scratch on the left ankle bleeding. “Have you shown it to mom and dad already?” he asks. “No” Nikhil says wiping his tears. “Okay. Now, close your eyes and I will fix it so it won’t hurt. Okay?” Sid asks Nikhil. Nikhil closes his eyes. Sid holds Nikhil’s right shoulder with his left hand, and places the palm of his right hand on the wound. After a few seconds, he lifts his palm and the wound has disappeared. “Okay. Now you can open your eyes. Promise me that you won’t tell about this to anyone. If you tell anyone, then I will tell dad and mom that you have been jumping from the chair and hurting yourself. Understood?” “It doesn’t hurt anymore” Nikhil looks at the site of the vanished wound and smiles, “Can you also show me a magic?”  “Okay, this one is called, The Disappearing Coin” Sid says and gets a one rupee coin out of his pocket, and holds it behind Nikhil’s left ear, and asks “Okay, now you saw that I have the coin behind your left ear, right?”  “Right” Nikhil agrees.  “I will make that coin disappear and come out in a different place. Where do you want it to come out?”  “In my pocket” Nikhil smiles.  “You got it.” Sid says, and removes his left hand from behind Nikhil’s left ear, and asks, “Do you think it’s inside your pocket now?”  “Yes” Nikhil smiles.  “Now see, you’re supposed to say no and then act surprised when you find it in your pocket” Sid explains to Nikhil, “that’s how magic works.” “But you always show me the coin magic. Show me something else. Not the coins, again” Nikhil says.  “Okay. So, you don’t like the coin tricks anymore. Now, I will show you a very special trick today, but you have to promise me you will never let anyone know about this secret trick. Promise?” Sid asks Nikhil.  “Promise” Nikhil laughs with giddy expectations.  “Bring me one of those Roses from that pot”  Nikhil says, “Okay”, and goes out of the room, plucks a rose from its vase, and brings it back in the room for Sid.  “Now, the name of this magic is Change The Color Of The Flower. Understood?” Sid asks.  “Understood”, Nikhil replies with a smile in expectation of a super cool magic.  “What color is this flower?”  “Red” Nikhil replies with a giddy smile.  “What color do you want it to be?” Sid asks.  “Black” Nikhil replies.  “Black is not a good color for a flower. Choose something else.”  “Okay, blue” Nikhil changes his preference of color.  “Now, close your eyes, so that I can perform my magic trick” Sid says with a smile.  “Okay” Nikhil, says and closes his eyes with a smile.  Sid holds the red rose on his left hand, and moves his right hand over it, and says to Nikhil, “Open your eyes”  Nikhil opens his eyes to see a bright blue rose in Sid’s left hand. His eyes widen and his grin grows huge when he sees the flower.  “How did you do that?” he asks Sid.  “A magician never gives out his tricks. You are in the third grade now. When you are in the tenth grade, you will learn these tricks automatically. Do you understand?” Sid says.  “Yes” Nikhil replies with frustration for not being able to know the trick from his elder brother.  “Now, remember, you promised me that you would not speak about this magic to anyone. Okay, remember that.”  “Okay” Nikhil says politely.  “Now, go do your homework. I will show you a better trick tomorrow.”  “Really?” Nikhil’s face lights up in anticipation of a bigger magic tomorrow. ****************TO BE CONTINUED********************************* Last edited: 06-Jan-09 07:54 PM

NEW YEAR’S DAY 1980 “Honey, don’t worry. Everything will be okay” the man tries in vain to soothe his crying wife while he is driving the car in the highway. “I am never going to have a child” the wife continues sobbing, the white handkerchief in her left hand completely soaked with her tears. “Come on now, don’t be so pessimistic. With the advancement of medicine now days, anything is possible. You must not lose heart.” The husband tries in vain again. “You’re the quintessential optimist. You should have left me years ago.” “Now, please don’t say that. You know I love you. I could not imagine losing you. I don’t need a child, honey, to be happy. You’re what I need.” “But how can we be happy as a family when I cannot even bear your child. It’s been seven long years since we got married.” The wife quits sobbing, yet the sulking remains. “Gupta ji’s son was cute, wasn’t he?” the husband tries changing the subject. “Oh! He has beautiful eyes, just like his mother’s.” the wife agrees. “True.” “And that smile, oh, that smile, it can melt mountains.” The wife smiles for the first time, remembering Gupta ji’s three-year old son’s infectious smile. “How old is he again?” the husband asks again. “Three-year old, I think.” The wife replies with a smile. “Yeah, he’s a pretty boy” the husband sighs. “We can adopt” the wife says while looking directly in her husband’s eyes. “What was that?” the husband asks with a turn of the head to look at his wife. “We can adopt a kid.” The wife explains. “It’s not the same as having your own. Isn’t that what you want, to have your own kid?” the husband doesn’t seem to understand his wife’s position. “Of course, I want us to have our own kid. But, don’t you think the last seven years of our futile efforts have proven that we cannot conceive? I think we should consider adoption. It doesn’t matter if the kid is not biologically ours. Millions of people adopt kids every day, and love them as their own. I don’t see why we cannot do that.” The wife explains in detail. “I did not say we cannot do that. I was just saying that, I thought, you wanted to have your own kid.” “Well, it will still be our kid, just not biological. That’s all.” The wife seems pretty confident about the issue. “If that’s what you want, then, we can certainly try that. Honey, like I said, I don’t care about having or not having a kid. You are my happiness. As long as I have you, I couldn’t care less about anything in the world. If you want to adopt a kid, I am happy. If you want to keep trying to have our own biological baby, I’m happy.” The husband explains. “I think we should…” the wife averts her eyes from the road because of a sudden brightness that fills the entire area surrounding the road and the car. The husband, not being able to see anything ahead due to the strong brightness, jams his foot on the brakes, and the car skids on the road for a good ten-twelve yards, before turning 180 degrees on the road. “What the hell is it?” the husband asks his wife while putting his right hand in front of his eyes to try and see outside. “I don’t know.” The wife says with both her hands covering her face. “Let’s go out and look” the husband says, with his right hand still in front of his eyes. “I can’t even open my eyes.” The wife says, with her hands in the same position. Just then, suddenly, there’s a big boom sound, like a bomb exploding, and the light moves farther and farther from the car. Finally, it disappears in the horizon. Both the husband and wife get off the car and walk towards the direction of the light. After walking a few dozen yards towards the direction of the light, and stopping for a minute to look at it, they just stand there, the husband with his right hand above his wife’s shoulder, the wife with her left hand around the back of her husband’s waist, and the right hand on his chest. After a few more minutes of looking at the dark horizon, and not being able to comprehend what that thing was, they slowly walk back towards their car. As they open their car doors, both husband and wife hear a faint sound of a baby. “Do you hear that?” the husband asks. “Yeah. Where’s it coming from?” the wife asks, and then spots something a few yards away to the left, and says to her husband, “Look! Over there! Is that a baby?” “Where?” the husband doesn’t see the baby. “There” the wife yells, and she runs towards something in the darkness. The husband follows her. They both reach where the baby is. “Oooh! Look at the poor thing. Who could have left their baby here, in this darkness, in the middle of nowhere?” the wife asks. She lifts the baby from the ground, carries it in her arms, and presses the baby against her own body to make it warm. “Whose baby is it?” the husband asks, while looking around the area, trying to see if he can see any other people looking for the baby. “I don’t know. But he’s cute. Who could leave such a beautiful boy here in the middle of nowhere to freeze and die?” the wife asks her husband. “We should take him and hand him to the police.” The husband suggests. “Okay.” The wife smiles, kisses the baby boy in his cheeks, the child smiles back and pats her twice on her cheeks with his soft little hands. “Oooh! I love him. You’re a cutie, aren’t you?” the wife talks to the child, and both she and her husband walk towards their car on the middle of the highway. ****************************************************** Normal 0 false false false EN-US X-NONE X-NONE <w:LsdException Locked="false" Priority="9" QFormat=
