HELLO FOLKS,

i am graduating this may with my doctorate degree. i have been offered post-doc starting this august in the same university where i got my degree. i have been offered to work either in opt or h1. i am confused now. should i choose h1 or opt? i have concerns that if i stay in opt, i have one year period when i can search new job and god forbid! in case i lose my job, i can maintain my status till one year passes. but in h1, i will have very very short time to look for another job or go to school again if i lose job.

so folks please help me out. share your ideas. what you would have done in my case.
i am naive.

Can you not directly file for a green card or sth since u are gonna be in EB2 thing? I am not sure abt this but I suggest you to do some more research in this stuff and see whether u can file for GC?

All the best for your future career. BTW, kun major ma PhD gareko??

I dont think it is too much to think about. Post-doc generally do not lose the job unless and until you yourself quit from the job. In my case, I would go for H1-B and then file dual intent for Green Card. By doing this way, you will get H1-B and then GC within 3 years. I know in fact for science major (if you also did Ph.D in science), you will be qualified as up and coming professional scientist if you have 2-3 papers in good international journals.

I would suggest you to go with H1-B, even though it is true that you dont have to pay tax while in OPT, but getting GC will be easier in the short-run.
