KATHMANDU, April 24: A majority of members in the central committee of the second largest ruling party, Communist Party of Nepal (Unified Marxist-Leninist), have termed the government move to initiate action against the army chief as wrong.

The views of the central committee members have stood in the way of the top UML leadership supporting the Maoists in sacking army chief Rookmangud Katawal, according to a senior UML leader.

The UML leaders put forth their views at an informal central committee meeting held on Friday afternoon.

“One hundred percent of the members participating in the meeting said: What has happened is wrong. The government sought clarifications (from the army chief). This is a given and it should now be over and done with. It should be stopped right there,” the party’s central committee member, Pradip Nepal, said, giving journalists a a gist of the views expressed during the meeting. Over 75 out of the 116-member central committee participated in the meeting.

However, vice chairman of the party and Home Minister Bam Dev Gautam said what he had said earlier was entirely correct.

Gautam, who was acting chairman of the party during party chairman Jhalanath Khanal’s China visit earlier this week when the government-army row reached its peak, supported Maoist-led government’s decision to take action against the army chief. Gautam said he supported the Maoist decision as the chairman, before leaving for China, had entrusted him to do so.

Following Gautam’s decision to support the Unified CPN (Maoist), a faction of the party led by KP Oli had sharply criticized his move and lobbied against the decision.

The UML informal meeting, however, failed to come up with any concrete decision over the matter. The party also failed to convene its standing committee meeting, scheduled to be held on Friday following the informal central committee meeting. The standing committee meeting has now been deferred till Saturday.

The UML is now centerstage as the largest ruling party, Unified CPN (Maoist), has insisted on taking action against the army chief while the main opposition Nepali Congress is vehemently opposed to the decision. The UML’s role has become decisive at the present juncture.

Immediately after Khanal´s arrival back in the capital, cutting short his week-long China visit on Thursday, UML leaders were engaged throughout the day in finding middle ground for bailing the government out of the quagmire over action against the army chief.

Khanal held parleys with party leaders, President Dr Ram Baran Yadav and Maoist leaders to discuss ways to settle the row.
