A Nepali student, Dr. Pukar Malla, has been elected as the President of the Harvard Graduate Council for the academic year 2010/11. Malla is a Masters in Public Administration candidate at the Harvard Kennedy School of Government. This is the first time that a Nepali national has been elected to such an esteemed position at Harvard. The graduate council is a representative student government of the twelve graduate and professional schools at Harvard and serves the interests of the 13,600 graduate students at Harvard. The council advocates student issues to the central administration, fosters cross-university collaboration and nurtures social ambience among the graduate students, according to fellow Harvard student Bisundev Mahato. Malla's team recently organised the inaugural Harvard Leadership Conference, where 300 students and 41 speakers participated. Former Prime Minister of Haiti, Michele Pierre-Louis, Rear Admiral Susan Blumenthal and US Congressman Ed Markey were the keynote speakers. This year, the council also aims to officialise university-wide student groups. Malla finished his high schooling in Nepal from St. Xavier's and Budhanilkantha schools. In the US, he has been educated at acclaimed institutions including Swarthmore, Cornell and Harvard. He has been an active member of the Nepali community in the US. He is the Co-Founder and Secretary General of the global Nepali youth movement, Nepal Ko Yuwa. He is an International Coordination Council member of the NRN Association and a Co-Founder of the Computer-Association of Nepal - USA.

8848m you got it absolutely right! moreover, I am really curious what Mr. Malla has done for the country? I failed to understand we nepali have become so weak??? that we are now trying to salvage pride from one individual's achievement which has nothing to with the country, its development and nothing do to with fellow nepali's. btw, Kul Chanda Gautam (Former V C of UN was princeton Grad) and current VP of National Planning Commission (nepal) Dr. Jagdish Chanda Pokhrel (MIT Grad) were actually from the rural village and they did not go to BNK or ST XAV. Make sense folks? while Mr. Malla is just trying to win over people under the guise of his parents coming from rural nepal..what the F! should have added this statement too to make it more original " life liberty and pursuit of happiness" he might be talented, but I do not see anything special!! Do not try to create another hero who is more of showbiz man! Mahabir Pun, AKoirala, Sanduk Roit, Puspa Basnet are there if you need to feel proud of being NEPALI!

Shantipriya, you're comparing someone who is still in studies to people with grey hair, and arguing that he has not done anything for the country so far. The last paragraph of the original posting contains a few things that I consider quite substantial for someone to be in school right now.
The fact that a Nepali is the President of an association that comprises of all the graduate schools of Harvard is quite an achievement considering that most of the people from there are going to be the top-rated people in their fields in the future.
More than a matter of being proud - this was an inspiration for me. I have always felt incapable of representing a student body at my school that I find has always been more privileged than I have ever been, but this showed me how I can use this to my advantage.

I like Pukar, he is a good man.
Some of the posters here need to get rid of their negative attitude. Just say "good job" and move on with your life, if you don't like Pukar. There is no point in showing Mahabir Dai and diminishing Pukar. It is unfair both for Mahabir dai and for Pukar.
So, here is for Pukar's professional progress in the future, and hoping that he gets what he wants in life. Our collective success as Nepali is based on our individual success, so let's hope that all Nepalese, wherever they are, are successful in what they are looking for. We should learn to see our success in Pukar's success.

Well done, Pukar.
Well said, Pire.
My experience is that in and around Nepali communities in Nepal and around the world, if you do NOT have at least 10 per cent of people out there who are out to badmouth you (anonymously, if vocally) in public for all sorts of shortcomings (as though they expected you to be a saint!), then, you have NOT achieved anything of significance.
So, some silly criticism by some anonymous posters here and there = a sure signal that you are doing something damn right.
Besides, some people appear to be genetically predisposed to NOT ever being capable of seeing the better sides of other people. And when that happens, all one can do is wish such people well, smile and move on to greater things.
That said, congratulations, Pukar, and may your achievement inspire, in however small or big ways, other Nepalis to push for greater excellence in all that they do anywhere in the world.
