Yesterday evening had a small argument among our friends. We were talking about Medical doctors n Ph D doctors. There were 2 Medical docs, and 3 who have damaged heads (Ph D- Permanent Head Damage).

Ph Ds were claiming-
They are much better than Medical Docs becoz t
- They have studied longer
- Getting Ph D is not a joke
- Know more than Medical Docs
- spent almost 10 years continuously after higher education (+2)
- Have to sacrifice many things (lucrative job offer after Masters, travel frequently for presentation and other family commitment)
-PhD DRs r more respected than Medical DRs
-

Medical Doctors argued in this way
-Almost everyone who do Ph D once tried for Medical Doc and Failed
- They study more than Ph Ds  (10 years after +2) in just 4 years.
- Every Medical Doc is easily fit in job market.
- You need more patience and must put more hard work to be medical doc.
- Everyone can be a Ph D Doc, but Everyone cannot be a Medical Doc.
-Ph D's main intention is only to put DR in front of their names whereas Medicals are determined to save others Life.

----------------
*Medical Docs = Who have not done Ph D in specific field such as MBBS/BDS/MS/MD etc
Ph D Docs = Who have done Ph Ds in any other sub than Medical (Engg, Arts, Social Sciences, Comptrs etc )

Interesting thread Amazing bro! It prompted me to look into what actually the word "Doctor" meant because as someone has pointed it out, the subject comes up time and again even among our friends. The word interestingly was/is used for many meanings. Interested folks can follow the link.

them people who were arguing over this topic don't know the fundamental difference between a Phd and an MD degree. Although both are 'doctorate' degrees; doctorate itself, for the purpose it's used, can or cannot be the highest degree in the field.

Phd (Doctorate of Philosophy) is a Research Doctorate Degree -- a license to teach and conduct scholarly research and is the pinnacle of the degrees one can earn in his/her field. It requires a creation of an original idea on top of the body of knowledge in the field.

MD (Doctor of Medicine) is a Professional Doctorate Degree -- gives you the license only to practice medical profession and NOT for teaching and research. It is NOT the terminal degree and hence NOT equivalent to a Phd. Other degrees, equivalent to MD, are Professional Doctorate in Engineering, PDEng (in Holland) or the Doctor of Jurisprudence(JD) in the US for that matter.

-------------

Different countries/Universities have different names for a degree. Don't get confused or overwhelmed by the Salutation (Dr.) Even a charlatan can call himself Dr. (or Daaktar Saap) hahaha. It's just used to refer/address to the person in a society. For professional purpose, people go by appending their degree at the end of their name and which is how it should be IMO. Like

"XYZ", Phd
"ABC", MD
"123", MD, Phd

what's in a name, anyways?

NO comparision everyone can not do PhD but to be a medical doctor you just need to read books. If chances were given everyone can read those books.
