Hi guys, I was watching special Dateline on NBC today; The Rolling stone magazine editor said Michael Jackson is/was most famous artist all the time in America even more famous than Elvis Presley. I think personally he is the 2nd most famous person in the world all the time after Bruce Lee. What do you guys think who is the most famous/known person in the world all the time?

Common no_quiero , don’t know who made that list and you did paste here. According to the list A. Einstein is the most famous person. I don’t believe that. Do you really think people from Mustang/Darfur/ remote village of India know who is the Einstein, Shakespeare, Washington is? And there is no Amitab Bachhan in the list? I think more 2 billion people know him.
I bet majority of them know Bruce Lee, Michael Jackson, Pale, Mohammad Ali and Bin Laden. Ask your grand ma or grand pa in Nepal whom do they know Michael Jackson/Bruce Lee or Albert Einstein/Abraham Lincoln.

AFNU HAJUR BA HAJUR AMA LAI KEHI NASODHE PANI SAJHA KO SAP LE MICHEAL JACKSON KO BARE MA CHAHI SODHNA BHYAYECHA. 1. Nepal bhanda aru dherai desh cha. Many football crazy nation will know pele maradona. I think in nepal pele maradona is more household name than michael jackson. You were probably born in 1980's when jackson was hit. But before that there have been person who had world wide reputation. Elvis had unprecedented success. His popularity waned after he died. Same thing with beatles. Jackson populartiy will also not remain as it was today. For future generation jackson will be just like what is elvis is to us. I am myself from village of Nepal. I dont think many old people knows about micheal jackson. But with the introuduction of television and world cups from NTV many people do know famous footballers. 2. Famous does not mean known. Hitler is well known but is he famous? No. He is infamous. Many people who know michael jackson don't like his music. Many people don't like his personality and brand him as pedophile.

No Quiero, enough now, Now you are saying Elvis poplularity is less than Maradona? Are you joking? I don't think so,even from his grave yard he earns 50 million dollar a year from Album royalty. He died in 1978 that means he is still marketable than most of the present singer. So you can speak the popularity of Maradona for other countries but others over here can't even speak Michael Jackson popularity in the world.

I would personally pick the Great Osama Bin Laden who is the modern day freedom fighter for the many voiceless people whose cause was to stop American domination in the global and liberate many people from injustice.

Joint! If the rest fall in the same category as Jenna Jameson does, then they are those we would collectively tease aloud 'Kuri Kuri Nakachari'. 'M' is for Michael and 'M' is for MTV too. Irrespective of that, the latter has a say on who the most famous person in the world is/was and for what reasons. Click Here

It is wrong time to ask who is the most famous person in the world when michael jackson is recently dead . Similarly during american election most famous person could well be obama. And this things keeps on changing with time. Michael's popularity can only estimated after 15-20 years. What is true is his legacy will remain . If Micachel becomes more popular than Elvis or Beatles after 20 years than only this thing can be accpeted. To judge now will be completly unfair on bealtes and elvis or for that matter frank sinatra. Elvis popularity in his time was unprecedented. Similarly, world has never seen next beatlemania. Girls litrally threw themselves on the member of beatles. They created mass hysteria. Now there is no more beatles and hence no beatlemania although their admirer do remain all around the world. When Beatles landed on JFK in 1960s it was really a pandamonium with hundreds of thousands crowd all over . Never have the world ever seen so many people come just to see a band member.

FYI! Beatlemania is still strong as ever and is unofficially accepted by the Brit as a national heritage or national pride whichever you wanna call it.

Bruce Lee....I am suprise that there people as young 8 years "gora" who knows who this guy despite his untimely death about 30 years ago. The influence of Bruce Lee is still strong in both movies and mixed martial.

I think Bruce Lee too. no qauiero, How do you justify your statement when Bruce Lee is still well known around the world after 30 years of his death. Ask a 10 yrs boy from Alaska to Argentina, Zimbabwe to Mumbai slumdog neighborhood most of all know Bruce Lee and Michael Jackson. Even my 70 years grandma knwe the word 'Bruce Lee'. She used to say '"A" guy fights like Bruce Lee', he is so strong"

hahaa.... everybody uses their grandma to judge who is famous? Bisal I already said it will be wrong to judge now. Let few years pass, let a new born kid grow up with new genrations of songs. Who knows their favourite may be Linkin park , beyonce etc. Michael jackson will take back seat as did elvis. And you may have heard bruce lee. But you certainly are in illusion that everybody in the world has heard of bruce lee. No. Probably we have lived near china and have their influence. I remember few weeks earlier I was talking about hollywood films with my house mates (from nigeria (2) , syria, germany and china) . I talked about bruce lee and only one of them knew about Bruce lee and that was guy from syria. Even chinese was asking, " who is bruce lee? what is his chinese name? I may know him?".

Arko kura, if you go back to 40s,50s and 60s , Frank Sinatra was what Michael jackson is now. If you look at world famous persons of all time you will see name of Sinatra right on top somewhere . But realistically speaking, how many nepalese know him now after 40-50 years of his music? In a long run people like Elvis and sinatra will just edge jackson because they are not only all time greatest singers but also famous hollywood actors with numerous hollywood hits. There are many people in the world who are more into movies than in music.

I agree with Bisal as I have had same experience here in England. I could not believe my year when a a kid as young a 8 years old told me he knew who Bruce Lee was and as if to convince me he even did the trademark move of Bruce.

Here comes No Quiero with another theory, why did you add alive person like Maradona and Pele if you were talking about most famous dead people. Just admit you don't like Michael Jackson, you were putting the same theory how your villagers knew Pele and Maradona. Michael Jackson can be compared with Elivis and Beatles , he has sold more than 750 million album world wide. Don't say Micahel Jackson is like Frank Sintatra, just remember Micahel Jackson is the person who changed music industry with short movie type of music video. Nobody did that before Micahel Jackson, you can see his influnce every where upto Bollywood dance. Did you forget Elvis Mania and Jackson Mania? PS: The best selling artist provided is extremely confusing.

No quiero! Let me go back to a very basic question: Can you even differentiate between the words "famous" and "popular"? All your rants seem to have stemmed from the very confusion of these two words. Famous means well-known or having name recognition Michael Jackson has a name recognition all over the world while Elvis Presley's fame pretty much ends at the US borders. Other famous Americans who might be even more globally well-known than Presley might be Tom Cruise, Muhammad Ali, Michael Jordan, Frank Sinatra, Tiger Woods, Bill Gates and the recent political figures because of the far-reach of the Internet and media. Michael Jackson had an advantage in reaching nooks and crannies of the world over other celebrities because music is a very portable form of entertainment and stereo radio has been one of the most accessible form of entertainment for generations from developed to third-world countries. The rest of the ultra famous celebrities have to either appear on TV set or magazines/books to be known by people. About most of us mentioning grandmother is indeed a very credible gauge to measure fame of a given person because a typical grand-mother in Nepal is an uneducated lady past her golden years who can hardly grasp new information. Still if granny can recognize Michael Jackson, then he must be quite famous. If you go to any corner of the world and tell people that Michael Jackson just died, they will most likely reply that he was a phenomenal showman. Now let's get to the word "Popular". It means liked by majority of people. Michael Jackson took the world by storm after the release of his iconic album Thriller. His popularity faded to just being famous especially in the US after his legal battles plagued him and the yellow journalism capitalized on his woes. Michael Jordan was very popular until his retirement and now he is wildly famous. After Jackson's death, his name has been grabbing headlinex on every kind of media from TV, Internet, print to word of mouth. Yes, he is definitely more popular (meaning getting public attention) than say a month ago. Will he become so popular after two or three years? No the news media will not cover him so much as now.and people have to get on with their lives. No Quiero! You also wrote: " It is wrong time to ask who is the most famous person in the world when michael jackson is recently dead . Similarly during american election most famous person could well be obama. And this things keeps on changing with time. Michael's popularity can only estimated after 15-20 years. What is true is his legacy will remain . " The question about "who is the most famous person in the world currently?" can be asked now, tomorrow or 10 or 30 years later or basically whenever. But after 30 years, there will be a new generation exposed to the then relevant information, artists and what the media chooses to feed the public's brains. A lot of people who have known Michael Jackson would be dead by then. There is always somebody in the world who has the most name recognition globally at any given point in time or during any given generation. Before Michael came in the scene, of course there was somebody else who was the most famous one in the world. I would say it could be one among Queen Elizabeth the Second, Hitler, Bruce Lee, Pele, Muhammad Ali, FDR, Churchill etc. Most scientific way, thought it sounds exhaustive and impractical, to find the most famous one during any given generation is to go to every country in the world with a list of nominated personalities' names and ask a certain percentage of the population if they can identify their names and for what reason and tally the results. The bottom-line is: there is always a most well-known or famous (not necessarily most popular) person in the world during any generation. And it seems pretty darn likely that we have found our person at this point in time or generation who is indeed the most famous person in the world and that is no other than Michael Joseph Jackson. Case closed! By the way, Amitabh Bachchan was voted the star of the millennium. How well does that claim hold up now considering the overwhelming outpourings of grief for the late Jackson from people all around the Universe?
