All Eyes on our Home Minister
It seems that our media houses, cadres of the old stinky political parties, and anybody who is not happy with the rise of the RSP are looking for something so that they can gossip, cry and whine about anything that has to do with the young cabinet under Balen Shah.
The number one target for any guff seems to be our Home Minister, Sudan Gurung. Some of our media wallahs affiliated with the once-major political parties are now searching through the big, dusty books in our Yatayat office to figure out who actually owns the private vehicles Sudan seems to be driving around town.
These so-called patrakars have obtained copies of the vehicles' Blue Books and are now questioning the vehicles' ownership. Does it really matter if the vehicles are owned by his girlfriend, a business house or his friends? It seems that we have different standards for our new ones, while those who have ruined this nation for the past two decades can get away with anything.
As long as there is no conflict of interest and nobody is getting the government contracts and funds without bidding or due process, I see no problem if our ministers live in somebody's house or drive somebody's car. We had Prachanda renting one of the shady contractors' houses and the media did not have any issues with it. We have Oli shifting to a luxury villa in Gundu and nobody questioned who owns the house and how Oli pays the rent?
I think some of us forget that our old sadakchaap netas were a starving lot who only used their mouth to spew venom while they never really engaged in any physical work or professional jobs before they came to power. The new ones are mostly those who have held professional jobs or were active in social service and seem to have enough means to survive on their own before they were elected.
Yes, our media and those who are politically engaged should question our elected officials but it seems that the Balen government's every move has been scrutinized, questioned and sometimes even lampooned by those who had been busy milking the system. Now, they are worried that their days of getting government grants and jobs based on political affiliation are over.
Some of our political analysts are already questioning the Home Minister's actions and think that these are populist moves and will invite political accidents in the future. Maybe these so-called experts should question the media and our society itself for not being able to rise in the past three decades against the same old fogies who have made a mockery of our constitution and have destroyed our judiciary, law enforcement agencies and the bureaucracy.
Sudan Gurung is in the hot seat for now. He is probably listening to Tupac Shakur's album 'All Eyez on Me' while the disgruntled old jholeys and those who have fattened themselves through government funds are singing "Every Breath You Take' by The Police.
We will see a lot of arrests in the days to come. When Deuba gets the Interpol notice and when Prachanda is hauled in, then the so-called old major political parties will gang up together to shut down the country, burn tyres and railings.
But if you ask the common citizens, they will not tell you that they think this government is authoritarian. They see it as a courageous government willing to hold the corrupt ones accountable and are happy that, for a change, our netas and hakims will be held accountable and will no longer be able to bleed this country dry.
