The Egg Question!
Once again we have the IVF kanda in town. Another senior doctor is reported to have been extracting eggs from young minor women for half a lakh Rupees and charging patients tens of lakhs from that investment.
A while ago, during the Sushila Karki government, the media reported a similar incident, but the government lawyers did not file any charges against those involved then because our laws are not clearly defined when it comes to such kind of procedures.
It seems that even our police wallahs are helpless when it comes to such cases because the court lets these doctors go home, and there is no criminal case at all. The doctor, Nutan Sharma is an Indian citizen who has been practicing in Nepal for decades. Earlier, her medical license was suspended when she was found to have carried out an abortion on a patient because the patient decided that she did not want a female child.
I think it's time our Law Minister worked on new laws and pass it through the parliament to punish some of our evil doctors who engage in such acts. We cannot allow some medical professionals to engage in such shady acts, especially when it concerns our minors.
The IVF center involved in this recent case is at B&B Hospital. It is a reputed hospital, but it seems that our private hospitals have enough dough to pay either the police or the courts or even our media to make things go away.
Our private hospitals make a killing charging patients tons for medical procedures. Even a doctor visit is now Rs 1,000 when it was only Rs 500 before COVID. In five years, the consultation fee has increased by 100%, and our successive governments have stayed silent on this issue.
When it comes to the IVF stuff, many parents who have been trying to conceive for years turn to these IVF centers hoping for a miracle. And these IVF centers know that the parents are desperate and will pay through the roof in hopes of finally having a child.
There are many doctors like Nutan Sharma who are involved in this IVF business across the country. They open up tons of branches across the country and recruit agents to sign up desperate parents and poor young girls as well. The parents are charged tens of lakhs while the poor young girls sell their eggs for a smartphone or thousands of Rupees.
Yes, we must protect our doctors as we have been witnessing many violent assaults against our medical professionals when things go wrong in our hospitals. Anyone assaulting a medical professional or even anybody else must be jailed, fined, and punished severely. But what do we do with some of our doctors who have forgotten their own oath and have turned into shady, evil byaparis?
Let us hope our government works on the laws and regulations so that IVF centers do not engage in such shady acts, and there has to be a ceiling on how much they can charge as well. Let us hope that these evil doctors will also face the music!
