Hi all,
My old passport will expire sometimes in 2013 and i would like to ask few questions regarding renewing to new MRP passport.
-Can my family members apply for my Passport renewal in Nepal if i send them documents ? I am not sure if they'll need my old passport or just "Nagarikta" will work for passport renewal ?
-How long is the wait time in Nepal for getting new MRP passport when i apply myself when i am visiting nepal ? Is it possible to get within 30 days ?
-I guess my last option would be to apply through Embassy in DC but someone mentioned that it may take 2-3 months ??
Any information would be appreciated.
Thanks much.

You shold be able to renew through Embassy in DC but it's kinda scary when you read following:
"14. Embassy is not responsible for any documents lost in post."
If your old passport in lost, the visa you have stamped on your old passport is no longer available and you might have to apply visa again.

Why is it scary? Why would they bear responsibility for documents lost in the mail. Lets use some common sense, shall we? When you mail your immigration packages to the USCIS, you think they will bear responsibilites?

I wouldn't be scared if i was mailing documents within US but sending documents to Nepal ??
I would be little worried unless Emabassy in DC has some prviate and reliable carriers.

arrogant, do it in the US. Send it via mail. This reminds me that my passport needs to be renewed too.

@ us returnee: you need to know the process first. They will not send your old passport to Nepal. It's just the application, filing fee photos.
@ arrogant: if you are in US, it's better to do it from embassy. Yes, it take 2-3 months because they need to send the your application back home and then after verifying your application, it will get printed and sent back to Nepalese embassy here in US. then only it will be mailed to you. and this takes time.
When I did mine: I had a tracking number for all the postal and was keeping eye on it. Once the record says it has been received by embassy, I called them to verify.
To all: even if your passport needs no renewal, it's better to make a MRP soon. Don't wait till last moment to make MRP as there will be more rush and more DELAY.

@arrogant: for that you have to request them. then you have to send another pre paid envelope for returning your old passport. Once you have your new passport ready then again you have to send your old passport to void it.
It is a just one more step with extra dollar but it's worth it.
If you call the embassy, transfer the call to passport section and talk with guy named Uddabh (उद्दभ), Tell him what you want and will work accordingly.
Thanks.

Though they have mentioned "Original Nepali citizenship certificate or current original Nepali passport" sounds like it is mandatory to send original passport.

I sent out my original passport with required documents to DC. I got renewed MRP passport in 45 days. Be safe, send through UPS or Fedex with return UPS or Fedex tracking method. They will call and inform to you if anything missing or incorrect. Though strictly follow the instrutions in the form/guidelines. Then, you will be fine. Sometime it takes more than 2 months or so due to lot. MRP is only printed at Nepal eventhough you submit in DC or any Nepal Embassy.

Where do you guys have your photo taken for 45mm x 35mm size? Can we have that size photo taken in Walgreen or similar stores? Do I need to send the original citizenship card?

looks like I might get some answers here. i'm planning to get a MRP next time I go home (or maybe I'll mail my existing passport to DC, if that works) but I've heard that they won't give you a new MRP until the old one expires, is that true?
The second issue is about changing a female's surname on her passport (and citizenship card) after marriage. Is it possible to (1) get a new MRP with surname change by surrendering an old but unexpired passport that doesn't have any visa stamp on it? and/or (2) do the same for the citizenship card? Has anyone done something simiar before?
Thanks folks!
