Comments: In 1993, the then Nepali government appointed Mr. Julian M. Sobin, a longtime Boston businessman, an Honorary Consul General of the Kingdom of Nepal in Boston.

[Mr. Richard Blum, husband of US Senator Diane Feinstein Democrat, California is the other Honorary Consul General of the Kingdom of Nepal in the US.]

Since his appointment, Mr. Sobin, with assistance from some members of the Greater Boston Nepali Community, has been formally promoting trade and social ties between Nepal and the United States.

Mr. Sobin is a Harvard University graduate whose first visit to Nepal took place way back in 1944, when he was in the US army and when Nepal was still under the Rana Shasan. He and his wife Leila have visited Nepal many times since 1972, the time of Mr. Sobin's second visit to the country.

Recently, Mr. Sobin, approaching 80, convinced a group of high-powered American businesspeople including a former Harvard Business School professor who had helped set up the Indian Institute of Management in Ahmedabad in the early Sixties to accompany him on a week-long trek to Lo Manthang 3750 meters in Upper Mustang near the Nepal-Tibet border -- a hauntingly beautiful area still restricted to most non-Nepali visitors.

While in Lo Manthang, the group, dubbing themselves Sobin's Sojourners, observed and participated in the local three-day Tizi Festival, was granted an audience one morning by the Mustangi Raja, and spent time talking with the local High Lamas about the promises and the problems of the Upper Mustang area.

The Mustangi King -- Jigme Parbal Bista -- especially invited Mr. Sobin back to the Royal Palace for dinner, and, was, by his nephew Tsewang Bista's accounts, kept thoroughly entertained by tales of Mr. Sobin's various WW2-time adventures in India, Nepal and Tibet.

At the end of the trek -- which was led by 28-year-old Nepali Guide with excellent judgment and leadership Mr. Satish Man Pati -- the Group was flown back to Kathmandu on a helicopter,
piloted by Madan KC, Nepal's world-famous pilot.

Later in Kathmandu, Mr. Sobin was granted a separate audience each by His Majesty the King Birendra and the Crown Prince Dipendra. He also met with the Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala.

The Group later had a "hey, we made it to Lo Manthang and back" celebratory dinner with the American Ambassador to Nepal, Mr. Ralph Frank, at the famous Rum Doodle Restaurant in Thamel.

Now, to publicize Upper Mustang in the US, members of Sobin's Sojourners, some of whom are journalists with The Economist and the Washington Post while others are published writers/authors in general, have planned on publishing -- in the course of next several months -- relevant travel articles in newspapers/magazines of Florida, Atlanta, Boston, New York and Washington DC.

In addition, Reunions-plus-lectures-plus-slide shows this Fall at the Harvard Clubs of Boston, New York City and Philadelphia are also being looked into. Don Gurewitz, who lives near Central Square in Cambridge, was the Group's photographer he says he finished 90 rolls in seven days!! and he will have the prints about Mustang ready for sale and distribution by late August.

Finally, as a Nepali I'm glad that I got a chance to visit this remote part of Nepal as one of Sobin's 12 sojourners. I have come back with
renewed interest in Nepal's development problems, and a deeper appreciation for our desh ko
natural beauty.

Would be nice to know if there's a Nepali group that's active in my community. If the current members are not upto it please make sure that responsible people are elected.
Thank you very much for your time.

Subject: One Pound Fund

Hello! I am in the Pharkera Ke Paincha list and I saw
your notice about the One Pound Fund. I am excited to
see that diasporic Nepalis are beginning to be
involved and linking up with local communities within
Nepal.

I was writing with a request: I recently finished a
documentary about a village in Lele, located just
outside Kathmandu, and the community's history and
current dilemmas in the process of setting up and
managing its own drinking water system. The
documentary examines the caste and gender dynamics and
the effects that these power relations have on the
process.

I was writing to ask if you would be interested in
arranging screenings for this video in Nepali
gatherings in your respective countries. This
documentary examines questions of gender and caste
that have not been approached before, and would help
to people to take these issues into consideration
while becoming involved in development activities.

I look forwards to hearing from you.
Best regards,
Sushma Joshi

Friend s :
I assume all of you have received US Census 2000 form. I filled mine and posted already. I just wanted to drop a note to encourage all of you to do so, if you have not done so yet.

There are some important race related questions which you should answer. While filling it out #7 or #8 , please make sure you mark x on non-hispanic and on #8 or #9 , mark x on Other Asian and write down "NEPALESE" in the space provided below. If you leave it blank, you'll be counted as other asians or as other races. I believe, we all
want and should be counted as proud Nepalese from the Himalayas.

One more point, all of us regardless of visa or residency status etc. should fill up the forms for all individuals living in your apartment or household. By law, the census data are for statistical and demographic purposes only. They can not be used for any other legal or illegal purposes.

You are also required by law to fill out the forms and put it in the mail promptly.

Thank you

Comments: Dear Mabi dai,

Thanks for your interest. GBNC struck an alliance with the Computer Association of Nepal CAN in December 1998 when the Vice President of CAN, Mr. Hare Ram Bhattarai, was visiting Boston then.

As a result of the alliance with CAN, we together launched the IT Nepal mailing list - it-nepal@mit.edu later migrated to it-nepal@listbot.com to facilitate sharing of IT-related information between interested people both inside and outside Nepal.

The list currently has more than 120 subscribers from around the world. Subscription to the mailing list is FREE and open to all. You may subscribe to the list by visiting the following site:

http://www.caninfo.org/itnepal.htm

GBNC and CAN have jointly worked on the adminstration and publicity of this list.

As part of the alliance, GBNC will also take an active role in promoting/publicising IT events being participated or represented by CAN in the Boston area and beyond, such as the junior IT summit with a representative from Nepal held at MIT in November 1998.

Hope this helps. And yes, if you have any new ideas on how we can get more out of the alliance, you are most welcome to bring them to GBNC and make them happen.

Thanks again for your interest in GBNC activities.

Regards,
Rajesh Babu Shrestha
GBNC Director
