Comments: San, a couple comments.
First, I'm not sure why comments that are RESPONDING to a post are appearing ABOVE the post. I think this is confusing and doesn't really contribute to following a discussion.
Also, I think it's easier to type comments into a window when you can see the whole window at one time. My impression is that this used to be the case. But now, if you hit reply, it's only possible to see part of what you're typing. This is bound to confuse even a good typist; people who are less comfortable with typing and to judge from typos, etc, that's a lot of folks here will find it even ahrder.

I appreciated your decision to remove the violent imagery of beheaded people some time back. I think it would also be wise to remove the obscene lyrics in the current kurakani discussion. I have no problem with people using the F word and obscenities in discussion it only makes them look like fools, which is their problem , but to post a pornographic rap lyric is completely inappropriate. I recognize this is at your discretion, and I appreciate that this site is not censored. However, in this case, I hope you'll see the wisdom in removing it. Otherwise I think a very bad precedent will be set.

Raje, only 6 people have signed up for the tournament till now so we're holding off until we have at least 20. But in the mean time I thought it would be fun to meet up some people and hang out at Good times on Sundays 8 to midnite. See you folks out there.

Hey Gunjan, I didn't get any info regarding the cancellation either. It's unfortunate that some people went to this meeting and it didn't take place. I'm sure [I hope] there's a plausible explanation for this…

Menace Of Terrorism By Maoists In Nepal

By VIJAYA K. SIGDEL

I am impelled to call on Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala of Nepal to take a bold action to root out the biggest problem: the growing menace of terrorism. Stopping terrorism must be a central priority of the government. As the prime minister of Nepal and as the leader of the only democratic party in the country, he has the highest responsibility to move quickly and act swiftly. And he has a duty to keep the peace and bring those committing crimes of terrorism to justice. In a free society, said Abraham Lincoln, “There can be no successful appeal from the ballot to the bullet; and those who take such appeal are sure to lose their cause and pay the costs.”

Like most Nepalis, I am bewildered and baffled by the total inability of four previous governments to find a prudent and coherent policy to deal with the problems of terrorism. As a result, the terrorists have steadily been gaining new ground and new strength, committing more crimes, destroying more property, killing more people and spreading even greater terror.

Koirala, in one of his statements, said “Politics of violence has never been successful in the world.” This is the expression of my own heart and I am in full accord with him. Robert F. Kennedy once voiced a similar concern about violence: “No wrongs have ever been righted by riots and civil disorders. A sniper is only a coward, not a hero, and uncontrolled, uncontrollable mob is only the voice of madness, not the voice of reason. ...They strike at the heart of obedience to law, peaceful process, and political cooperation, which are man’s last best hopes for a decent world.”

Indeed, the very essence and character of Nepal’s democracy is peaceful coexistence. We must solve all our problems through discussion, debate, dialogue and sometimes, when it is absolutely necessary, through peaceful, orderly and non-violent protests. Mahatma Gandhi wrote, “There is no hope for the aching world except through the narrow and straight path of nonviolence.”

Furthermore, liberty and democracy take root only when people are safe, healthy and prosperous. But, tragically, today, the peace, stability and security of our country Nepal are being shattered with murder and mayhem, looting, burning, threats, intimidation, extortion and fear perpetrated by the so-called Maoists.

As a consequence, the violence will permanently leave a sad memory of the death of our loved ones and the destruction of properties. And Nepal’s toddling democracy cannot survive for too long under the crushing weight of such instability and turmoil.

It simply cannot survive under the present reality in Nepal, making consolidation of democracy, economic progress and social justice an elusive dream. To that end, if we do not end terrorism now by using all our resources and energy, it will soon end our democracy. Those who are calling the current spiral of violence and terrorism in Nepal a political problem are, if not dishonestly, unwisely misleading both themselves and the people.

Frankly, I have been astounded to hear some ruling Nepali Congress leaders repeatedly uttering: “It is a political problem and it requires a political solution. We want to have a face to face dialogue with the Maoists,” or statements to that effect. This kind of mindless and irresponsible rhetoric, in my opinion, is only helping to lift the morale of the terrorists.

Hence, it is unconscionable for me to think that a democratically elected and legitimate government would actually sit down with the terrorists to negotiate, whose hands are dripping with blood and whose main objective is to destroy our democratic system in order to establish a totalitarian state. One must ask what is there to be achieved by commencing such dialogues? Let us not deceive ourselves. We are dealing with people who are so determined to achieve their objective with violence, masquerading under the so-called people’s war. Presently, the terrorists actually believe they are winning the battle; they certainly have won the propaganda battle.

During my recent eight-district trek from Sunsari to Dolakha, many ordinary people, along the trail, told me that they were terrified the Maoists will take over Nepal in few years. It is obvious that the terrorists have successfully spread their terror into the hearts and minds of Nepali people.

The age-old serene mountains and valleys of our beloved land have been turned into killing fields. The Maoists will never give up violence voluntarily. The only time they will accept a peaceful solution when they realize that they cannot win the battle. Therefore, our government can only obtain a peaceful resolution when it clearly demonstrates its strength and might.

That strength must emanate from a firm government policy and through the development of a police force, which is capable of maintaining law and order in our society. Despite heroic efforts put by the police in combating terrorism, their work is severely hampered by the lack of adequate training, proper equipment, manpower, intelligence gathering and, above all, low morale.

As you understand, our police force was never trained to handle problems of such magnitude. I believe that it will be a grave mistake to bring the military to maintain internal security. Therefore, I hope that this option will be avoided at all costs. Other countries’ experience around the world shows us that the military has rarely been successful in combating terrorism.

It is a sad commentary that terrorism has been a fact of life throughout the human history. And, as Margaret Thatcher pointed out: “Terrorism is a scourge of the modern age.” Beside Nepal, myriad of countries in the world have been tormented by similar problems. Some of them have achieved remarkable success in defeating terrorism. Others are still struggling to contain it. May be this is the high time for us to seriously consult friendly foreign governments to learn from their experiences, solicit advice and, perhaps, seek help.

There are no simple solutions in combating terrorism. This problem will not disappear either easily or expeditiously. We must be prepared for the long haul. I see difficulty ahead. But there is nothing we cannot overcome. Therefore, we must begin the work now. Any delay will only bring unimaginable consequences for Nepal’s future. However, any action we take, or any legislation we pass, must be consistent with the highest ideals of democracy, freedom and human rights. These are the seminal values for which we struggled for decades and have pledged to preserve and nurture. If we allow ourselves to trample on these basic values for temporary expediency or short-term gain, instead of defeating the enemies of democracy, we stand to defeat democracy itself.

I hope that with Lord Pashupatinath’s blessing and help from fellow countrymen, Koirala will be able to lead all Nepalis from the current difficulties to a new era of hope and optimism.

I just tried posting a classified and it did not work. I was using Opera 5.02. So I tried with IE and it worked.

It's kinda worrying. Have you also been assimilated by the Borg-like Microsoft?

Hey Nuraj, I just checked the logs for last month and there were 21700 sessions out of which there were 8 sessions using Opera. So I don't really feel it's worth borg time to cater to Opera viewers. SP 7/20/2001

I don't know if one can distinuish registered members
and nonregistered members by seeing the posting. I
think we shouldn't make such distinct difference. [My
eyes are a bit incompetent in differentiating between
colors so I don't know if Gandhiji is correct.]

I think any kind of such difference can be
uncomfortable over time. This is my opinion only. I have
some reasons to believe that we may be better off not
letting people know who is registered and who are not.
Why should we differentiate between posters, anyway?

I want you and everybody else to think about it and
decide about it. I think it will be very good practice
for us to 'predict the future'.[Don't worry, I stayed
at holiday inn last night:-]

Dear Dumdum,

You can link to an image already existing in some other server by doing the following:
Let's say you see an image in some site that you want to share in this forum. What you have to do is Right-Click on the image and select properties.
- In the PROPERTIES box, copy the image location as shown in the Address URL field. It will be of the format: http://www.xyz.com/…/imagename.jpg or imagename.gif
- now, copy this image location address and paste it to the message you are posting to GBNC forum as follows..
- You're posting… " ..blah blah see the picture below

- That should do it… if you want some formatting such as aligning left or right include 'align="right" or align="left" such as
